Default What do the airlines prefer?

in the long run is it better to go to a FAR 61 or FAR 141 fbo? do the airlines care or do they just want the lisences. there sure seems to be a lot more 61's than 141's.

Look at some of the Airline website and what they require to get hired. It doesn't say anything about Part 61 or 141, doesn't say anything about the age of the aircraft you fly, whether they have GPS or Glass Panel, whether you get a type rating, and so on.

Just Hours Total
Hours Multi Engine
Hours Instrument etc.

I agree however if you have some glass expirence some regionals will take you with fewer hours.

Airlines prefer graduates from Embry-Riddle and UND over less-than-standard learning environments such as your local FBO.

I'm curious as to which airlines do this. I haven't really looked into it, but have also not heard this. I know some will lower requirements if you have been through a CRJ/ERJ/PB&J sim course, but didn't know about the glass time.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just seeing what's going on out there...

Just curious, what would make FBO training less than standard? Couldn't a good CFI, some good home study courses, and experience flying in and around different types of airspace in part 61 training get you the ratings just as well as going to a big name flight school with a 141 curriculum can? Not to mention you can save about $30,000 and major in something other than aviation in college to fall back on. All the airlines ask for is a four-year degree, not an aviation-related four-year degree.

However, most part 61 FBOs cater to the weekend warrior whereas 141 schools are more career orientated. See if you can get a 141 trained CFI at a part 61 school, that way you can kind of get the 141 experience without the cost. Just a thought.

Try posting that question at one of the 141 boards to see their side of the story.

I think it depends on the FBO. I am getting my instruction from a local FBO, and have been using the same instructor. He actually runs his own flight school out of this FBO. I told him what my goals are, and in what time frame I want to have all of my ratings finished. He sat down and came up with figures for me, and thinks it is realistic that I can finish in the next 8-9 months. My goal is to have all of my ratings by this time next year.

I think a good thing to do, is to talk with the FBO, and let them know what your goals are, and in what time frame you want to accomplish these goals. They should be able to work with you. If they think you are just a weekend warrior, they may treat you as such. But, if they know your goals are otherwise, they will certainly accommodate you. After all, it is money for them.

There are a lot of schools out there. When you do your search, search for quality of instruction, not price. It is a huge misconception that FBO's are way cheaper than schools like Riddle, UND, and FSA (take the degree cost out). Start asking fellow pilots what they spent PPL through MEI at boh types of schools and I think you will find out the numbers are very close ( unless you fly a Cessna 150 for everything but multi ).

Quality instruction coupled with a good syllabus will get you through your first interview and sim ride. You can't sacrifice quality, you'll wish you hadn't later...

Good luck,
ILS

There are FBO's out there that are as good as any of the academies and can get you done just as fast. The airlines don't care. It's about hours, ratings, background, and experience. The big academies are over rated in my book, though the websites are very nice.

If you can find it, the best route would be a flying club with a variety of well maintained aircraft with an airline pilot CFI who's doing it for fun.
