Default Study materials

I know you guys use the FAA advisory circular's and publications to study from but I was wondering which ones. I want to have read them all before I go. And are there any other books that I will need?

If you want to be a little extra prepared, catch up on The Airplane Flying Handbook and The Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge.

You'll be surprised how much the information in those books will come into play(checkrides, CFI ratings, interviews, etc.).

Some people also use the Jeppeson 'Instrument/Commercial Handbook'... this is an excellent resource! Other FAA books include Aviation Weather, Aviation Weather Services, PTS's and last but not least the FAR/AIM.

What about the instrument flying manual and the instrument procedures manual. Is there an FAA publication about flying multi engine? Also I haven't found a reasonably priced POH for the BE76 did you guys have to pay $30-$50 for one? Thanks.

Just remember that the Jeppesen Instrument Commercial Handbook is in fact a Boat Anchor.

The entire line of Jeppesen texts are excellent.

I forgot about the Instrument Phase... Yes, first would be Instrument Flying Handbook. Then, Instrument Procedures Handbook. IFH is the more basic of the two, and IPH has much more detailed information geared more towards real-world IFR flight.

Airplane Flying Handbook has a chapter devoted to Multiengine Airplanes(good start), however, once you get the books from the school, you'll get 2 multiengine training manuals(one is pretty much just BE76 systems). These were created, I believe by the Chief Pilot, and you'll only find these at Aviator. They are excellent!

What books do you get from the school? Are they just for the Duchess?

The multi-engine training stuff for the private multi consists of the two multi-engine books that are mentioned that we put together here from several sources of which one book is basically devoted to the Duchess and it's systems and the other is for multi-engine aerodynamics and performance considerations and could apply to any twin-engine out there. I think the stuff in the Airplane Flying Handbook is okay, but if you want to read it, I'd read it first then forget anything it says to do that the multi-engine books here say to do or that the POH recommends. The FAA books when discussing flying always tell you that the POH is what to refer to in case anything is different.

If you can stand to stare at the screen pretty much all of the FAA books are available online if you want to do some reading before you get here (or you could print off the relevant parts) and keep you from maybe getting them twice. The Jeppesen books I think are a bit easier to read and are a bit more coherent, I had the Private one and I borrowed the Instrument one, but since the FAA is who makes the rules we fly by, those books are the ones we use as the holy grail here.

I've gotten the Airplane Flying Handbook, the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, the Instrument Flying Handbook, a bunch of PTS's, the two multi-engine books and the Duchess POH here...2 of the last 3 mentioned basically all on the Duchess.

So the only books from the school are the 2 multi engine books. No other ones? Or do they give you the POH and PTS's? I don't understand.

I have gotten all of those books here from the school, but the only 2 that the school actually produces are the two multi-engine books...everything else they purchase and sell to you as part of the price of the school (from the way I understand it).

I hope that clears it up!
