So I'm looking at 2 potential FBOs to get a PPL at. - is a somewhat larger airport (KVNY if you're fimiliar with the SoCal area), and their rates are: CFI rate= $49hr Aircraft rental = $110 - the other is a much smaller airport with only one controller for air and ground: CFI rate= $26hr Aircraft rental = $100 My question is: would it be more beneficial and worth the extra money to begin training at a larger FBO with more traffic rather than a smaller one? |

Doesn't matter. They're both close enough to LA that you're going to get to deal with traffic and radio calls.

Amen to that. I did my commercial/CFI training in Arlington, which while uncontrolled and under the DFW Bravo turned out to be a death trap. I got more than enough experience working with uncontrolled fields AND not getting violated by busting the bravo. Probably the best combo you can come up with as far as staying on your toes.

Not only would the aircraft/instructor time be costing you more at the bigger airport, but you would also spend more time waiting (& paying) your turn to takeoff behind traffic. Experience at an airport with one controller is still experience at a tower controlled airport. I fly at an airport that seems to have two controllers at times, but only one at others. It makes absolutely no difference in my training! |
