Just curious on what kind of part time jobs the students and CFIs have (if the CFIs even have time) down at Ari?

CFI's don't really have time for part time jobs but there are some students that have them. Usually the students work for Mike (the owner) in some way. The hurricanes have provided quite a bit of work. I don't know what he pays. It's probably either 10 or 15 and hour. You could do work at the houses, fuel planes, work in dispatch when Mary's not there, repair the school... etc etc. There are a couple people I know of who have had jobs outside of school. Off the top of my head there is..... Sams club stock person, bartender, waitress, check out guy at a liquer store, Circuit City sales person. The thing about getting a job is.... it makes everything take a lot longer. In my opinion you're better off getting some more money in your loan and just doing what you came here for. You're not trying to become a drywall guy or a lawn maint tech. You're trying to be a pilot. But... money is a touchy subject so to each their own. There are jobs to be had here though.... If that's what you're asking. Vero is mostly populated by lazy, uneducated beach bums who are acting like they're trying to get their GED in between smoking pot and getting drunk. So there's plenty of need for responsible people to work. I don't think you would have a problem getting some kind of part time job if you needed it. j |

Thanks for the info, john. I understand a job can hold you back a bit, but a little extra cash wouldn't hurt for gas, groceries, soap, shaving cream, etc. Do you know Cruise? He posted a blog on JC while training at Ari, and he had a part time job. He said he could have finished the training in six months if it wasnt for the hurricanes last year while he held the job. I guess I'll see whats it like when I come down in August.

Did I hear someone calling my name? Yep, it's true, I had a part-time job waiting tables at a local seafood restaurant during training. It was good money....but I really don't recommend working during training. I was also working part-time at the school as well. Unfortunately, I truely feel my flying/ studying/ progress suffered because of it. If you "need" to work, and I do understand that it is necessary for some (hell, I was one of 'em), I would recommend AT LEAST waiting until you've completed your intrument rating. By that time you'd have formed some type of study habits and realize what's required to obtain each additional rating/ certificate. To answer another portion of your question......I know some instructors currently have part-time jobs on the side. Frankly, most instructors NEED to....but choose not to so they're are available to fly......or they wouldn't have enough money to live. Let me tell you this, if you don't already know, there isn't much money in flight instruction. Currently I am barely scraping by to pay my rent, etc... Fortunately, I'm not currently paying on my student loans or I would be.......well, we'll leave that one for another post. ![]() Hope this helps. Matt |

Neil is the best drywalling pilot ever. EVER...... ![]() i wasn't saying that there's anything wrong with getting a job. it just slows up the process. but if ya have to.... ya have too. i understand that.. I think waiting till after the instrument is a good suggestion as well. and.... if ya can find something that will allow you to read in the slow times it would also help. one of the guys works as a checkout guy at a liquer store. i think he mentioned that he studies when it's slow. but around here.... booze stores rarely get slow. there's not much else to do. haha. ps... i'm pretty sure i know who all the Ari guys are on here. i just don't know them by their usernames. j |

Thanks for the advice, Cruise. I think I should settle in first and see how things go at first. I agree with you that if i get a job it should be after instrument. I can't wait to become a starving cfi tho. Take care and good luck.

one more thought. you have to consider what the job is "costing" as well. if you get a job and it extends your stay here another 6 months (easily can do that) then you're spending a lot of extra money just living. is the part time job going to earn you 5 or 6 grand in that extra 6 months to pay for living expenses? rent = $500/month plus any other bills your bringing with you. I have a car bill. food and some kind of life while you're here = $200/month beer = $6250/month. haha poker money lost to me = $40/month gas money driving back and forth for that extra 6 months= 10 million dollars if you have an suv (a legitimate concern though). snorkling gear to see the cool stuff on riomar reef = $100 extra money to support your golfing habit = a crapload. the golf here rocks. plane fair home during a hurricane = 200 replacing all the food you lost in the hurricane = 200 plane fair for another hurricane = 220 replacing all the food that you just bough because there was no chance that a hurricane would hit the same city 2x = 200 you can see how it can add up really quickly. anyway.... hopefully it all works out. I probably should have gotten a job. it would have given me something to do instead of study all the time. my brain hurts. j |

For the aspiring pilot who has their Commercial ticket there is the summer season internship program: * Plenty of time building in the single-engine, twin-blade, complex, low-performance, mowing device * X-C experience from one neighborhood to the other * Dealing in complex terrain with faster, more maneuverable, and heavier traffic issues * Pay determined by management * Must pass a checkout process and be typed rated before operation * Must on call and ready at a moment’s notice Sign up now since there is already a waiting list for this summer. |

I was in a little slump but I've won 6-8 times now. I'm definitely up. Hopefully I'll stay that way. Speaking of being in a slump. Crazy Teeter hasn't won in quite a while. He was always in the cash for a while. I guess our mad poker skillz have passed him by. hahaha. I have pictures of the "Hurricane Charley Golf Tournament" from last year. 4 of us hit the links as Charlie was making landfall directally west. It was WINDY.... and I kicked ass that day too. https://johnnytriplesticks.smugmug.com/ j PS.... Not talking light of the hurricanes. They devistated florida last year and hopefully we'll never have a bunch of direct hits again. But ya gotta make the best of bad situations when you're in them. |
