Default YAY - VA hospital....

My dad went to his local VA hospital to get a hearing aid (FINALLY!!) and not only is he getting one, he is going to receive $770 a month. This is compensation for incurring the hearing loss due to machinery he used in the dental lab where he worked while enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. Obviously, he's a very happy camper...

Great news, and good for him! He can now hear better, and has an extra $770 in his pocket!

Hey, we've been telling him for YEARS to go and get a hearing aid. BUT he said he could hear--he just couldn't hear the words CLEARLY. D'OH!
Believe me, I'm sure when he realizes how much time he's lost--he's gonna kick himself in the ass.
What's going to be interesting is when his identical twin brother finds out he's getting a monthly check out of the deal. HE'S the one who went for the hearing aid for the same problem and urged my Dad to get one too.

BTW---I have no idea how this thread got on the Family Life section. I could swear I put it under General Topics. Sorry, mods.....

Speaking from experience of being seen and having worked at two of them. I think that the VA does an amazing job with the task they have. The Seattle VA has made many innovations in prosthetic limbs. The VA in its entirety has brought to the public a working bar code system for medication administration and the first large scale computerized charting system that integrates inpatient and outpatient records seamlessly throughout the country. The latter two have raised pt safety numerous levels. If you are a nurse who makes a med error in the VA system it is because you wanted to. You have to override numerous warnings to give the wrong medication even the right medication outside the allotted window.
It is way underfunded for the mission it serves. It is also the most bureaucratic hospital system in the world.

Glad to hear the VA finally did something right after all the horror stories I have heard. I wish the government did a better job of taking care of our Vets.

It got here because I moved it here. You are not losing your mind 'Q'. General Topics is 'supposed' to be aviation related. There was a 'link' from the GT area but that has since expired.

The VA is not all bad at all. Many of them are quite efficient and they were early adopters in different areas of Electronic Medical Records. Also, they will do things on the cutting edge if they think it will help. I am involved with a biotech company that makes devices to help regain use of paralyzed limbs. Medicare and Medicaid systems have been slow to pay for this, but the VA has been paying for this for its patients for over a year.

Glad to hear he's getting the hearing aid and some cash to boot! Can't beat that deal.

I'm pretty sure I could use a hearing aid....but like most people don't want one because I don't want to believe I need one.
