Default Finally got my Fudgie the Whale!

Had a pretty good birthday today, thanks to my wife and family! Its days like these that I remember why I am happy to be a family guy.

As for the thread title, well here it goes.

I am not sure about the age range of everyone, but when I was a kid (Some 30+ years back), Carvel used to always advertise there ice cream cakes on T.V. and on the radio. They had cakes for all seasons and occasions, you know the Santa cake, Tom the Turkey for thanksgiving, the pumpkin for Halloween. Anyway, I used to always remember Fudgie the Wale cake, as they promoted it as a father’s day cake, or something for dad (Whale of a cake for a whale of a dad).

I remember always wanting to get my dad a Fudgie the Whale, and how I never had the chance. Unfortunately my dad was, or is (I’m not really sure) a bit of a F’ up!!! He and my mom divorced when I was 6, and we haven’t crossed paths since 1987, so I have basically written him off for dead. Anyway, years after that growing up for some reason that Fudgie the Whale thing stuck with me, and it became a bit of a reminder of a crap situation with my dad.

Well, fast forward to about 1 year or so ago and now I am a dad. My wife is from England, where there is no Carvel (and therefore no Fudgie the Whale), so one day I explained the whole Fudgie thing to her, what it was, how I always wanted to get on for my dad but never had the chance, etc. I remember saying to her, jokingly I recall, “I hope my kids will get me a Fudgie the Whale one day.”

Well, after unwrapping a bunch of great gifts from her and the kids she calls me into the kitchen for tea right before we were about to go out for a birthday dinner…. and what is on the table.

I got so choked up I began to cry a bit (I know, might seem a bit much, crying over a cake, but I think it was a lot of childhood stuff in there as well). My poor son didn’t understand what was wrong, so he did his part by giving me hugs and asking “What’s wong Daddy” (Not misspelled, it’s the best he can do).

I never thought something so small could mean so much.

I’m happy to be a family man.

I can bet that you were the only one thinking about that. I'm probably the biggest pervert on here. And I wasn't even thinking of that.

That's sweet what your wife and family did for you.

I hope to have that one day...yea, I know wtfe!

Happy birthday Keith!

I definitely remember Fudgie the Whale....Tom Carvel here!

Stern used to do a great Cookie Pus skit.....I think Cookie Pus was the predecessor to Fudgie the Whale.
