I had a c-sec with my second, too!

Congrats on the new arrival, here's to a speedy recovery

(I hope your wife is a more patient patient than I was, I wanted OUT and got released 40 hours after my c-sec! Probably a little too soon....)

All,

Just back from the hospital this afternoon and finally settling back into being at home again after a rather hair-raising few days.

Thank you all for the well wishes, my wife and I are very appreciative.

My wife is fully recovered from the C-section mishap. Actually there was no problem with the surgery itself, but with the administering of the anesthetic, I didn’t have time to make this clear in the first post.

In brief, an epidural anesthetic was administered and apparently (some one in a million chance) the anesthetic was channeled upward toward the chest and downward toward the waist, as opposed to only downward. This effectively paralyzed my wife from the shoulders down. That coupled with a slightly low blood pressure from the beginning of the surgery, and she was unable to breath on her own towards the end of the procedure. The use of respiration equipment and O2 was required, and those were some scary moments, let me tell you.

Anyway, after being moved from the maternity ward to the main hospital she was placed in recovery, where she remained on respiration and was closely monitored. Once the anesthetic began to wear off things started to improve, she was able to move and talk again within a few hours afterwards. We were able to then return to maternity and properly meet our new daughter.

Alls well that ends well I guess, and we are all home safe and sound.

Thanks again for your thoughts. Once I get my feet firmly back on the ground I will be sure to post a pic or two, if anyone is interested. (Personally I think most newborns look alike )

Good night.

OMG stories like that scare the crap out of me, and I've been there, twice!

I am so sorry you had to go through that! What an awful ordeal! My c-sec was not a 'crash' section (done in an emergency) so there was plenty of prep time, and everything went like it was supposed to and I was still nervous! I can't imagine how scary that must have been!

So glad to hear everything is okay now!

Congratulations on the new arrival. We are glad to hear your wife is doing well now. Yes. the complication is uncommon but does occur.

Anaesthesia is the most frightening part of surgery to me when I am a patient. We carefully pick our surgeon but never even ask who the anaesthesiologist will be. Most of the time, we never even meet them until we are in the operating room (someone else does the pre-op exam) and because of the drugs that are used are great for causing us to not rememeber what went on in the time around surgery.

Just trying to settle into a nightly routine, I had almost forgot about the good old 2:00 am feeds!

Anyway, as far as the prep time for the C-section, this thing was planned in late November! How’s that for prep time? Long and short is they simply messed up. This was also the second C-section for us, same hospital, same surgeon, hell it was even the same operating room. However, like the doc said above, all too often little attention is paid to the anesthetist and more is placed on the surgeon. We are guilty of the same oversight and it almost cost us.

The surgeon that preformed the operation is the chief of the entire maternity ward. This guy is renowned in North Germany as one of the leading natal physician-surgeons. Like I mentioned, he did our first C-section, and it was flawless, the whole experience. But even the first time we had no idea of the anesthetist’s skill set, everything just went right so we didn’t think anything of it. This time around it seems like we got Joe Blow anesthetist, with a sharp needle, bucket full of drugs, and some spare time!

Again, the surgeon did a bang up job, and the funny part is that we thought once the baby was out, and we were holding her and taking pictures, the worst of what could happen was behind us and we were out of the woods. In fact, by the time my wife required the emergency treatment the surgeon had already finished up, shook my hand, and was on his way out of the O.R. Little did we know what was in store.

I think the part that bothers me the most, as I can look back at it now, was they way they played it down, making it seem like everything that was happening was normal. I am not doctor, but I am not an idiot either. I know what a heart monitor is, I know what a sphygmomanometer is, and I know what their readings mean. I could tell just by the tempo in the room that something was very wrong. Shortly after they told me that I would have to leave the room, and more people flooded in. By that point I was pretty much holding back tears. Then finally when they entered the room where I was waiting with my daughter and told me that they had to move my wife, and that I could either stay here with my new born or accompany my wife to the observation/recovery room, but they preferred that I went with my wife in case any “decisions” needed to be made, I think they took ten years off my life.

Anyway, it’s behind us now, and that was the last time for us.

Thanks again for the support.

Thanks for the kind words. Like I said before, I think newborns look alike, but I still like to think she is cute.

I really hope she is going to look more like my wife then me as she gets older. Not saying I think I’m a bad looking guy, but our son is already basically a smaller version of me already. If I was 150 lbs lighter, a meter shorter, and had a Macy Gray hair-do, my son and I would be twins!

Everyone comments on it and it drives my wife nuts. I’m just hoping that our little girl will at least show some signs of my wife actually being her mother.

I’ve let her know, and she will be back online as soon as she can sit at the computer comfortably. She has mentioned PF recently, and that she felt bad about being such a low poster, but by the time she signed up it was getting hard for her to sit at the compy for long periods at a time. She is very my looking forward to getting into PF, and trying to hook up with other women in the PHX area, as we are beginning to pack up our tents over here and getting ready to hit the road.

I think she is going to take over all of the non-aviation related questions that we need answers to, so she’ll be busy soon enough.

We might need to hit you up with a few more questions about the area as well, transportation related, as we are looking into possibly moving her parents over before long as well, so I think she will get in touch with you specifically.

BTW, you ever going to get back that PM? Its only been 2 months

Well, we are giving our notice next week, which starts a 3 month countdown, however the end of March is the goal, putting up in PHX around the middle of April.
