| First trip to the ER. Figured it would happen eventually, our little guy is part monkey, I swear.
Our 23-month old fell off the couch this morning and smacked his face on the coffee table. I was sitting on the floor, and heard the *whack* and the scream that followed. I picked him up and looked at his head for a bump, but instead saw a gash on the side of his mouth. Lovely. It stopped bleeding pretty quickly, and he stopped crying soon afterwards too, but I could tell from the gash it was pretty deep and needed to be looked at.
So, shoes and coats for both the kids and off we went to the closest Urgent Care place. The doc looked at him for all of 5 seconds and said he needed stitches, but because of his age he would have to be sedated and they couldn't deal with that there and he was going to have to go to an ER. They wrote me a referral, and I called the in-laws to see if they could watch the 3 1/2 year old so I wouldn't have to drag him through an afternoon of ER drama. Thankfully they were able to tend to him, so off he went for an afternoon with Grandma and Grandpa.
Then Little Bruiser and I headed for the hospital. The ER was quiet and they got us right in. Very nice folks all around. Bruiser was sedated via a shot in the butt and was 'out' within about 60 seconds. He recieved 3 stitches. Watching him come out from his sedation was kind of funny. It was like watching a minature drunk person.

Just make sure he doesn't lick the fridge . . .

You switched from "Little Bruiser" to "Bruiser" so I thought you were talking about that FOforever dude...'till I got to the "shot in the butt" part.

| Re: First trip to the ER. Heh. Glad I don't have a coffee table. Gavin tends to try to run in the kitchen in just socks. Normally ends in a 10 point face plant, though....
Glad Bruiser is okay, though. Falls like that scare the hell out of you until you know if they're really bad or not.

| Re: First trip to the ER. 2 years is generally when most people stop counting in months and starting using years. When my little guy turns 2 next month, that's the end of 'months' for us!
Pediatricians will contine to use the 'month' measurement even past 3 years old, because it helps accuratly measure growth & development.

| Re: First trip to the ER. Yeah, at 2 it becomes the year and half year, so 2, 2 1/2, 3, etc. probably till they are like 10 or so lol. I've heard a lot of people ask why you say months, and parents know, it's because as hard as we try not to, we are always comparing our kids, not neccessarily in a negative way, but just for curiosity and statistical type thoughts, so to say your kid is "one" when they are 23 months, is quite misleading, because there is such a huge difference in development between one and two, so even though they aren't yet two, saying they are one could be confusing. Then when you get old like me, you just stop counting around 24 and stick to "I'm 24" for as long as it's believable

At least it was just 3 stitches. The sedation was the most 'risky' part of it all (not that I was worried, really it was the best way to put stitches in someone so small!). Watching my 'baby' laying limp on a operating table was a little un-nerving. I kept telling myself "it's just stitches, not open heart surgery", but it was still creepy seeing him like that.

Glad to hear bruiser is ok. We just had to put our coffee table in the basement because Emily already wacked her head a few times on it, thankfully no ER visits.

| Re: First trip to the ER. You made it to 23 months without a trip to the ER?????!!!!!!!! Ugh.....we've been to the urgent care so many times that they sent us coupons for 10% off our next visit (no joke). We've had a few true ER visits as well...and she's only 13 months.
I must suck at the whole parenting thing!

My six yr old had some dental surgery when he was 3 and had to be knocked out. They gave me the option of holding him while he smelled the funny gas. Sure, no problem I thought. I swear I was balling when he went under. Yes, it's only somehting minor but when they go almost lifeless, it is very un-nerving as you said.

At every place we went (the urgent care facility, the ER, and then again today at our regular Ped's office to have the stiches removed) they asked lots of questions as to what happened.
In all honesty, I actually did feel a little negligent! But, I also know that these things happen. We've made it 3 1/2 years without a urgent care/ER visit! Our older son is MUCH more cautious than the little guy. I swear sometimes I wish I could wrap him in bubble wrap and a helmet every day.
His stitches came out today, he screamed like the dickens and both the Doc and I had to hold him down for the removal process . The boy is not only wiggly, but strong! His lip looks great though, and Doc said he should have minimal, if any scarring.

Everytime he showed up, they'd stop what they were playing and switch to football. Then he could say things like "Your mama doesn't love you. You don't have proper football equipment!"
