Help with Hubby's Anniversary Present...

My hubby is in love with Flying and I support him all the way but I don't know much about it.. That is why I came here to get some help. Our anniversary is approaching in the next few months but I have no idea what to get him. I am hoping you guys can help me out. He is working on his commercial rating and has been flying for some time now.. We don't own a plane yet so we don't need things for a plane but I want something to show him I really care...

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.. I apologize if this is the wrong thing to post here - I am just getting a little desperate.

I'd think a plane would show him that you really do care.

Without knowing what he has, it is hard to say. Maybe a gift certificate from the place where he is flying from. It may seem cheesy or not thought out, but if you don't know much about flying (like my wife), a gift cert, would show you care and allow him to get exactly what he wants.

Hmm. Getting desperate over an anniversary gift.

What are some of his likes? Hobbies? Give some more info to help narrow stuff down.

He has a lot of his things - flight simulator program, new flight sunglasses, survival kit, headset. He loves the outdoors on top of his flying...Fishing, hunting, camping, ATV'ing. He mostly flies 172's. I would love to get him a plane but not sure exactly what he is looking for. The only part of getting flight time is that he is deployed right now and I am not sure how to get flight time for him besides giving him cash - which to me sounds impersonal. I am getting desperate since I have to send in a few weeks to get there on time and don't want to rush it.

most local flight schools do gift certificates for flights. You could go down to your local airport and check them out. Because of the size of JC you could even ask us about them and you'll likely get a response about whether a local flight school is good or not.

Welcome! I think your husband is very lucky to have someone who puts so much thought into this occasion.

Depending on how long his deployment is, you might consider perhaps a magazine subscription (flying, or AOPA or the like) to keep ihim informed and up to date about his hobby? That is if he doesn't already have one. I know when I was overseas I would look forward to that type of thing.

Do you know if he has a nice headset? That might be a nice upscale gift if he is still using a "starter" headset. You can find nice ones in the 200 dollar range all the way to REALLY nice noise cancelling ones for around a grand. Do a search on the forums here to see what everyone's opinion of the best is.

Just trying to help brainstorm!

Unfortunately the hubby is out of the states so local flight schools are not an option.

His deployment is at least for a year - and he already get Flying and AOPA magazines in the mail...

I know he has a headset but not sure of what he has... I know he doesn't have a noise cancelling one because I would have known if he paid a grand for it...

Thank you for all the help guys - I figured if I wanted some ideas for flight gifts - this would be the place to go..

Maybe another form of the question is... If you could have one thing for flying what would it be? Airplanes are a little out of the equation since I am not sure what he wants..

I agree that a magazine subscription would be a nice present, you said that he has flightsim, how into it is he? If he's really in to it, I'd look at getting him the PMDG 737 for it.

yeah....a nice headset would be cool, or how bout one of them nice A2 leather aviator jackets ?? AOPA has nice ones with the wings embroidered and stuff...makes a great gift for a pilot. AOPA has a small catolog you can get that has nothing but gift items.

Welcome to JC! This type of gift is difficult to come up with...I have been trying to find the perfect gift for the pilots in my family my entire life! I know several other people have mentioned headsets, if you choose to upgrade there are a million opinons out there (but, I just bought a set of Lightspeed active noise reduction) for about $500. and i LOVE them!

another idea...maybe a new flight bag, or even great pics of airplanes framed....hand held GPS, hand held radio. Look at sportys.com they always have all sorts of gift ideas

or some other types of aviation art,

Kinda a thought provoker.... but here is one.

He is a pilot and an outdoors man... so

Go to an antique store, or pawn shop, and pick up an one of those older compasses. World War II era, Army surplus, field type are really neat little tools. Attach some type of card/message with something to the effect of "Whatever the travel, find your way home."

Not too expensive of a gift, but with the right message it can be a real keepsake.

Here is the type I am talking about (New based on the old designs) but this type.

PilotWife, what city do you live in? If you live anywhere near Chicago, there is a great memorabilia store in the basement of the Hilton O'Hare that has old books, posters, art, models, shirts, and the whole deal.

For something small to go with a larger gift (if that's what you're looking for), go to www.bdkingpress.com and pick up "Hostage to Fortune", "The High and the Mighty", and "The Left Seat". Great books about the early days of airline flying, that are being reprinted.

PilotWife76---let me see if I can help guide you in the right direction and offer suggestions you are looking for. Lindsey had a good idea with noise cancelling headsets, the NEKKID' pics would probably help him out in his time of loneliness on the other side of the world
