Default Getting Engaged....Need some Ideas

Alright guys---I am planning to get engaged to my gilfriend of 3 yrs. (since our freshmen yr. of college). I've got the ring, now I need some ideas. Any of you wanna throw some stuff out there on the table?

I'm graduating from college this August, and we won't get married until 2006-2007 but she's definately an awesome girl. Let me know what you guys have done, are planning on doing, or have heard of someone doing.

Ahhhh---a little nervous, but things are coming together!

Ideas? Sell the ring, close your eyes, then I'll kick you in the package a few times. After you recover, I'll kick you one more time and then you can give me some money and go shopping with me.

We'll do that for about 30 minutes.....

It'll save you some hearthache...

Want my opinion? YOU need to come up with the idea!! I just think it's not the same if you didn't! It will mean more.

You know, I had a really funny post, but it got 'rejected'. My bad for saying "Hon! Lookit this!" before I hit the "continue' button.

I know the feeling, but I usually get that about 30 minutes after I post when Emily IM's me and says "WTFO!?"

Well, there's a saying about (paraphrased) "defocate" or "exit the toilet", so I decided to "defocate" but the better half didn't see the humor.

Personally, and this is just me, I say please don't make it a 'public' thing. Like having the proposal announced over the loundspeaker at a pro basketball game or anything.

It really depends on what your common interests are, what you guys enjoying doing together. Does she like flying? You could take her somewhere and pop the question in the air. Is she (or you) a die-hard romantic traditionalist? Maybe a dinner for two in the quiet of your own house would be nice.

One thing though, putting the ring in a food product is usually not recommended. My cousin's husband put hers in a slushie, and she decided she didn't want to finish the slushie and almost chucked it out the car window before finding the ring. He almost drove off the road screaming at her not to throw the slushie.

One of my colleagues is married to a pilot. He somehow got permission to mow "Judy marry me!" in a farmer's field, then he took her for a sight-seeing ride in a Cub over the field.

Here's what I did:

Took my (then) girlfriend to dinner at a decent (not overly nice - didn't want to tip my hand) restaraunt. It was in December, so I told her that we were going to see "A Christmas Carol" at the performing arts center.

On the way, I stopped at our favorite spot to walk - on the campus of the University of Tampa - since we "had a little time before the show".

We walked down to the river, chatted for a bit, then I took out a poem I had written for her and began reading from it. She had NO idea what I was doing until RIGHT at the very end when I dropped to my knee and brought out the ring.

I wasn't done there.

After we composed ourselves, we walked back up towards the main building where I had a horse and carriage waiting on her with a bottle of wine and a bouquet of flowers.

We took a carriage ride through the ritzy neighborhood which was all lit up for Christmas.

I STILL wasn't done:

As we neared the end of our time, I told her that we were going to another restaraunt where her family, my family, and our friends were all waiting on us.

She was COMPLETELY surprised all the way around!!!

If I could offer any advice is would be this: Plan it out!.

This is one of the biggest days in your relationship. One she will remember forEVER. Don't Fuggit up! Don't just be non-challante (sp?) about it and act as though it's no big deal.

Make a production out of it. Make it special.

Just my $0.02.

Drop me a line if you'd like any pointers.

I was taken out for a very nice dinner, and he popped the question that night in front of a fire (in a fireplace) at his apartment.

It was a surprise, and it wasn't. I knew he had the ring, I'd picked it out and I was with him when he bought it. But I did NOT know how/when/where he was going to give it to me.

Ok, so I just about ruined the proposal I got. For my birthday John got me tickets to go and see Shakespeare down at Navy Pier. We flew down to Meigs field that weekend. It was beautiful. We actually had to hold down in Chicago because Sean TUcker had just taken off for a photo fly by and there was smoke on the run way as well as him and his camera crew. We went down to Navy Pier, played some mini-golf, had a charicature done, had dinner, and went to the show. We flew back home, and went to his house to finish packing him for school. Mind you I was a bit emotional at this point, and I actually ended up getting a bit upset with him for getting ready to leave and not wanting to see me th enext day or knowing when he was coming back. A few minutes later he told me he had something he wanted to give me before he left for school. Something that woudl remind me of him. I turn aroudn to ask him what and he was down on one knee. He said he didn;t take the ring downtown because he didn;t want me to see the box and ruining the suprise.

Thank you all for your opinions and ideas! R2F, your story was much appreciated... I was pretty much thinking along the same lines with the carraige ride, and then showing up at a restaraunt where her family and mine were both waiting for us.

We'll see what happens, but overall I want it to be an awesome experience for her. I love the girl to death, and she supports my crazy flying lifestyle 110% (which from what I have heard is pretty hard to find with the exception of some of you on this website!). I'm just overall happy with her, and I look forward to spending the rest of my life with her. I just want her to be completely suprised/happy/enthusiastic about the whole night when I do this! I think it'll be a great time. All your info is greatly appreciated.

Lloyd---considering I love the girl, and am looking forward to our future together (which will someday include children), I am going to pass on your offer to kick me in my package.

Thanks again all---I'll let you all know the outcome!

Chris
