| Old Skool | Ok I forgot one more thing on the expense list. Batteries. Get stock in Duracell now cause I tell you every thing the kids use need batteries and they run out like every day. So add another $500 or $600 a month to your budget for batteries. |

| [ QUOTE ] I have a 5 month old and the daycare is killing me!!!!!!!!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Agreed. My youngest is five. We will be finished with daycare the end of August. That will free up about $320.00 per month and that's part time. I can't imagine having more than one in daycare at the same time. |

| Big Chief's Woman | MSN has a couple of good articles today about the cost of children and the cost of being a SAHM.. granted, the costs take into account housing and all that, but they also have a few good ideas for trimming those costs. |

| Old Skool | http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/...ids/P90259.asp That is BEYOND ridiculous! First of all, I don't know any one who paid $400 for Lamaze class. You can learn all about that and breast feeding online so take out those expenses. $200-400 a month for gymnastics, mommy and me yoga, and swimming? Well, that's easy--don't do it. Use some imagination and entertain your kids with some bubbles, crayons, a sprinkler, side walk chalk, etc. What baby seriosuly needs yoga? Most people already HAVE a camera and/or camcorder, but if you need those, you can can them easily for less then $1000. As for $12 books-well, use Amazon. My neighbor bought an "I'm going to be the big brother" book for her son, and she paid $17 for it. I found it on amazon for $3. Or use that thing called the library, where they let you use the books for free, gasp! I don't know one single Honda that won't fit a car seat. And most people have enough family and friends that they don't need to actually hire a babysitter. And $60 for a birthday cake? I make all my cakes, about $3 each. I don't know why, but these articles always really bug me. I just don't think they are at all realistic, AND I think they make people feel like every one else is doing baby yoga so they have to as well. Imagine if you instead put all that money into a savings account for your kids and presented them with a nice fat check for something like say, flight training? I bet they'd forgive you for not taking them to yoga at an age they can't remember any way. |

| Yeah, those figures are completely unrealistic. Most of us already have a car and internet access. if you've made it this far in your life without computer or DVD player, chances are that the baby won't increse your need for these items. Baby sitter? well, remember TheWife, not all of us are surrounded by family all of the time. My nearest family is 250 miles away and most of my family are in California. That's probably the most accurate part of the article. Babysitting can kill you....but it's not always a bad thing. when you have a 13 years old and an 8 year old, you just make the 13 year old babysit the 8-year old!! Then you don't have to pay them.... That Lamanze BS - well, although the article calls it "the right way", I'm quite certain that women have had it figured out for a long time. You could spend millions on a new child, but you don't have to... |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] You could spend millions on a new child, but you don't have to... [/ QUOTE ] Exactly. Well I know not every one has family near them but I thought we all at least had friends. Sorry, forgot to consider you before assuming that. JK, I swear it!!! I guess it's probably easier in Utah County Happy Valley Baby Capitol to swap babysitting with another mom. And if we did ever hire a babysitter, at least around here, the kids only expect like $3 an hour, not $10. (Geez, CFI's don't even make that, duh!) |

| Old Skool | lloyd, you are correct. After doing some in depth research I don't think a kid is going to cost me much more a month a good car payment. I am hopefull that when my wife gets pregnant and has a baby shower we will get a lot of the expensive stuff then. Then I guessing kids 2 & 3 will then get a lot of the hand me downs.... I have seen that you can spend too the moon a new baby but the majority is just not necessary. |

| Speaking of babies, and how much I love them. A few months ago, I'm in Barnes and Noble. I'm standing in one of the aisles perusing a book. About 10 feet from me is this 20-something mom with her baby in it's stroller. She's perusing a book with her back to me, and her baby (probably about 9-12 months old) is staring at me and smiling. So I look at the kid and give a mean grimace.....and the kid gets scared and starts crying. The mom turns around and looks at me (I have a straight face), and says "I'm so sorry....." as she calms her kid down. I say "no problem, it's no problem at all.." and continue reading. She calms the kid down and gets back to reading. Kid looks at me again, and the same thing again...repeat. She calms the kid down and apologizes to me again. She goes back to reading. Same thing...repeat. She finally tells her kid, who is pointing to me and crying, "I just can't take you anywhere....." and puts her book away and wheels her and her kid out of there. Mission accomplished. |
