The season is done, at least for me, and I've sat down and run all my totals. Since my first flight on 4/28 I worked 92 days and logged 418 hours. I now have more time in a 207 than I do in any other of my 40 different airframes and I can honestly say I am a much, much better pilot. I thought I was pretty good before but I was wrong.

I went to Hoonah 114 times, Haines 115, Gustavus 78, Skagway 76, Kake 23 and Excursion Inlet 16. My charter to Sitka was the only time I visited there. In those flights I only had 5 weather turn backs because I'm a huge chicken-S. I didn't much care for being the scout and usually let someone else who was more experienced blaze the trail for me. I scared the crap out of myself a few times, contemplated landing on a beach once, and hoped all summer for a charter to someplace off airport but that didn't happen! Only a lucky few found Glacier Point! The folks I had the pleasure of flying and working with are some of the most memorable and finest individuals I've ever met. It's really impressive to see a great team come together and I'm sorry I have to leave, very sorry.

If you're looking for a challenge of both mind and body then I'd suggest coming to fly in South East Alaska. It will change you, hopefully for the better. I think however it has ruined me and I'll be back.

I love this place.

The body of a woman believed to be in her 40s was pulled from the water near the plane.
The plane, a Twin Beechcraft Queen crashed at 11:53 a.m. According to the San Carlos Airport, two to three people may have been on board and the plane was en route to San Martin.
The San Mateo County search and rescue team has been called to the scene to look for additional victims.
People in small boats and kayaks initially came to the rescue.
Some sources are saying it was a Queen Air, and some are saying it was a Duchess. There is a Queen Air based in SQL, and BelAir has a fleet of Duchesses. From the picture, I'm very sure it was the Queen Air. Either way, very sad. This is the first fatal crash I can remember that actually occurred at the airport:(.

EDIT: Yes, it is a Queen Air.

SEATTLE - A Bellevue, Washington, woman is suing American Airlines, saying she was traumatized when an American plane ran off the runway at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport in 2008.
Passenger Jewel Thomas says she has suffered severe mental and emotional problems because of the incident.
The Boeing 757 was flying from Seattle to New York when it made an emergency landing at O'Hare. No physical injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
In her federal lawsuit filed Tuesday, Thomas contends that because the plane had electrical problems and was on a backup battery, the flight crew should have diverted sooner to another airport before the battery ran out and key systems were crippled.
A spokesperson for American was not immediately available for comment.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. American is operated by parent AMR Corp

I am sure that this lady has never had any car problems that caused her to exit the roadway and wait for assistance i.e. flat tire... but if she did I'm sure it caused her years of therapy to be able to get in a car again :insane:

I'm not sure if I'm just have a weird ear thing going on right now, or if the more powerful ANR messes with the pressure in your inner ear. I know it sounds crazy... I just wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience.

Hi All:

Through a well-connected family member, I am able to secure an interview for a foreign carrier. From speaking to an HR representatives, I was told that (if selected, and after training) there would be a high likelihood that I would fly 747s into the US and return. I may also have the option to maintain residence in the United States (and the Los Angeles area). The pay would be of a significant improvement over my CFI salary.

The problem is that I have a strong preference to work for an air carrier within the United States. Ultimately, I would like to build a career with a national or legacy carrier. Say I spend five to ten years with this foreign carrier; how difficult would the transfer of hours be from the international carrier to a U.S. carrier? Would it be of a particular issue if I maintain a [possibly second] logbook in accordance to FAA regulations? Would U.S. carriers look down upon me for seeking aviation employment from an international carrier?

I would hate to build a few thousand turbine hours, apply to a major U.S. airline, then discover that none of the hours were transferable.

Thanks!

SAN FRANCISCO -- A Qantas 747 heading to Sydney with with 212 passengers and a crew of 18 was forced to make an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport early Tuesday after an engine exploded in flight over the Pacific, authorities said.

Qantas Airways Flight No. 74 had departed SFO around 11:10 p.m. and had been in the air for about 45 minutes when passengers heard a loud bang and felt the plane vibrate.

Among the passengers was Neil Dufty, who was on the flight heading back to his home north of Sydney.

“We were about half an hour into the flight and there was a very strong shutter on the right hand side of the plane,” he told KTVU. “It wasn’t turbulence. It seemed that there was some pretty serious damage. People on the right hand side of the plane seemed very shocked. Apparently, there were flames coming out of the engine.”

Fellow passenger Elizabeth Thomas heard a loud noise.

“I heard a very strange noise,” Thomas said. “It’s hard to describe. I don’t travel that much but I knew it was very wrong. The staff looked a little alarmed and began to move very quickly.”

Nolan Goldstein also knew some had gone wrong

“I heard a thud, a bump and the plane veered off to the left,” he told KTVU. “It was very uncertain for a period of time until the captain announced that we had an engine that blew up…It was a real uncomfortable vibration at first and then the plane began to shake a bit.”

The explosion left a huge, gaping hole in the No. 4 engine. However, Qantas Airways spokesman Simon Rushton said there was no fire, but an engine surge can often cause what appear to be flames.

Dufty said the flight crew quieted down the initial panic.

“The captain came on and assured everybody that the plane was still relatively safe,” he said. “(He said) there was serious damage in one of the engines. We jettisoned some fuel and turned around. The captain made a very good landing. We all cheered.”

Airport duty manager Chris Davison said the pilot immediately turned the plane around and headed to SFO with emergency crews scrambled to the runway. The four-engine Boeing 747 was able to make a safe emergency landing at 12:45 a.m.

There were no injuries to anyone aboard the plane, Davison said.

"The airline is doing its best to reschedule those passengers," Davison said. In the meantime, the passengers from Flight 74 are staying at area hotels.
A good friend of mine has a 182 and has plans to put his wife, two kids, and brother in his plane for a trip. The catch (since it's 5 people) is that his small child is under 2 hence, not requiring a seat.

Two questions he presented to me for clarification -

1) Legality? I believe it's a legal configuration; and

2) Safe? There's always a risk when someone isn't strapped in.

JC'ers, what do you say?
