On the road...

On the road this year as an aerial survey pilot. I'm sure most of you guys know about the job description but, for those who don't, youre on the road for seven months and not going home for anything, not even a holiday.

We started the first week of November and actually got underway on the road here about two weeks ago. In those two weeks, I've flown about 50 hours. So far I've been in Rochester, NY, Johnstown, PA, Atlantic City, NJ, Pittsburgh, PA and now at KLUK in Cincinnati, OH.

After about four days of work in Johnstown, PA I left for Atlantic City, NJ.

After the Atlantic City, NJ project which was one day of work, I flew to Pittsburgh, PA.

This solid layer went from about KILG to about 25 miles east of the NESTO Intersection. Which is about 100nm.

Just west of Pittsburgh enroute to KLUK, I assume this is West Virginia.

At the end of the day, 5.1hrs of flying, I did the ILS 21L into KLUK. It wasn't terrible, broke out at around 600 feet, -ra, br.

This is the main GA airport of Rio, it's is also home of the aeroclube do Brasil (flying club and flight school) one of the first civil flight schools in the world, founded in 1911. Here in Brazil, well in Europe too, they Believe was Santos Dumont the first to fly a powered plane, if he had done this in the States he would probably be put in place of the W brothers. Well is flying machine was a lot better then the W brothers one....but they decided to write history in an other way.

This is my first (and only) landing at KOKC. I had some time to burn on night pattern work after my cross country, so we shot on down to KOKC and did one landing. It was awesome. The ATC guys were great.

This isn't related to the above picture, but this is still a good picture. I took this at Atlantic Aviation (PWA) the other night. The pilot was nice enough to let us in and have a look around. He also showed us around the rest of the hangar.

Catalina today...

Got out of class (exam on a Saturday...what the hell) and had the urge to go flying. My friends were all busy so I decided to go up alone and cruise on over to Catalina island.

Took some pictures of the flight, not the best quality due to my cell phone camera and the haziness of the day.

So stepping away from all of the troubles that plague our industry for a moment, I wanted to share what keeps me coming back to work each week (besides a halfway decent paycheck). :)

My wife and I hit 3 countries this year, which was an impressive feat in and of itself since I have been on reserve for over two years and have very little time off. Australia, New Zealand and Spain pins were added to our giant map on the wall.

So to those considering this career, if travel is your thing it is still very much worth it when you find yourself relaxing on the Mediterranean, sipping champagne in first class, exploring the back alleys of a many thousand year old village, eating weird food from a menu you can't read...the list goes on. Besides, I can't imagine actually forking out $24k for a first class to seat to Sydney :)
