I have renewed by CFI in the past by adding ratings, so my first renewal will be due in March 2010. I have to do a yearly FIRC as a Part 141 assistant chief, which is due at the end of this month.

I signed up for American Flyer's lifetime course, and would like to renew my CFI early, this month, so that I don't have to do the FIRC again in a few months.

Is this possible? From the way I read 61.197, it seems like I can only renew if the FIRC is completed within 3 months of the expiration. Maybe I am just reading it wrong, but is it possible to renew it early by doing a FIRC?

At my flight school, there is one particular student who has had a number of chances to straighten up and "fly right" but seems to fall down on every opportunity in my eyes. He lies, steals, parties relentlessly, refers to himself as Captain, and when we confront him, he acts sorry, wanders off to the owner of the school and claims that we harass and bully him since he is "young, rich, and handsome".

I've tried to be professional, but this guy really hits rock bottom in my opinion and is not cut out to be a pilot. My co-workers agree with me, and we seriously want him out and gone. We've denied him the opportunity to solo, had talks, and told him point blank that we won't ever be signing him off to test for a license; and he brushes us off, declaring that we can't do anything against him. I probably haven't helped the situation when once I actually exploded and declared that if he's a Captain, then I am a Brigade General and the chief flight instructor is General of the Army.

I'm really at wits end, and I don't want to fly with this guy anymore, nor do any of my co-workers. Unfortunately, the owner keeps telling us to fly him since he has been told we won't be letting him move on with training, and he doesn't seem to care.

Not quite sure what to do now except to keep scheduling all my other students and not leave any availability for him since we can't convince him to leave. Any advice?

I was prepared to send a primary student on his first solo today. But wouldn't you know, he LOST HIS MEDICAL/STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE!!!! He called me at midnight to tell me his dilemma. The end result was me spending around 3-4 hours today hunting down a solution. I called the Airman Certification Branch of the FAA, the Aeromedical Division, and finally the FSDO before it got all sorted out. I should have just made him schedule another appointment with the AME. But, he's only going to spend $2 now for the duplicate medical versus whatever the cost of another physical is. Moral of the story...Don't let your student lose their medical...it is not fun calling the FAA. Nontheless everyone I spoke with was very friendly.

I'm trying to work out how to get an AGI cert issued or processed. With the FOI & AGI certs done, I'm meant to make an appointment with a FSDO and present an 8710 form. Being in England, I checked with the London IFO but they passed me to the NY IFO and vice versa. Apparently an FAA inspector is hard to find here.

Looking at the IACRA FAQ, the recommending instructor doesn't have to send the university/teaching cert off just satisfy himself (why did I do the FOI then?) but I don't know if a DPE/Inspector needs to press the submit button in the end?

Do I need an FAA Inspector or just a CFI/GI to put me through IACRA - would IACRA just need to notice I have an FOI and AGI pass and then automatically issue me a certificate? Or do I need to do a FSDO or bust trip, weekend in Miami anyone?

I'm taking my CFI pratical this upcoming month or so. I let it expire in August :banghead: as I've been out of flying and was working on some personal stuff for a while.

My question is, does the FAA see me as an applicant for re-instatement of my certificate, or am I the same as a first-timer? The reason I ask is because only inspectors are permitted to perform initial CFI practicals, per Rochester FSDO. The flight school I'm working with claims that a DPE is just fine.

Thanks for the imput. I'm still researching...

His wife is concerned that DCA has a rider in their contracts which will result in him losing his job after 30 days of being unable to work. I'm hoping he could do ground/sim instruction to stay active and avoid the pitfalls of such an injury but I don't know how feasible that sort of thing is.
If for some reason my question is offsides or breaking any rules in reference to said contracts then let me apologize in advance. But, if anyone could shed any light on this I'm sure he and his wife would feel a lot better.
While I have a lot of help from other instructors, I will be teaching it privately and am interested in any tips that anybody has to help me make it the best experience it can be for my students and myself...

-I am planning so far to teach out of the FAA pubs. is this a good idea, or should I use some kind of set (asa, jepp...)?
-The class will be small, probably around five students.

Any suggestions or stories about that may shed some light on how to best accomplish ride the steep learning curve of pilot to teacher would be great. Ive been flying commercially (small equip, 135 & banners) for a few years and have never used my CFI for income. I know that it will be a lot of prep and hard work to get myself into the mode of instructor.

thanks!

Straight and level flight, turns, climbs, descents...all on 1 lesson plan or multiple? This would be the same lesson but would the FAA DE like to see a page for each?

What do you guys have?

61.23(a)(2) says "A person must hold at least a second-class medical certificate when exercising the privileges of a commercial pilot certificate"

61.23(a)(3)(iv) says "A person must hold at least a third-class medical certificate when exercising the privileges of a flight instructor certificate"

This question came up at my school the other day:
If an instructor is giving dual instruction, and acting PIC, and getting paid, isn't he exercising the privileges of both his commercial certificate AND his flight instructor certificate and therefore needs at least a second class medical? My answer was yes, you do need the 2nd class, but I was in the minority. I know that 61.23(b)(5) says a medical is not required if you are not acting PIC or serving as a required pilot crewmember. The question refers to instructing student pilots in which they can't act as PIC. Thanks!
