The season is done, at least for me, and I've sat down and run all my totals. Since my first flight on 4/28 I worked 92 days and logged 418 hours. I now have more time in a 207 than I do in any other of my 40 different airframes and I can honestly say I am a much, much better pilot. I thought I was pretty good before but I was wrong.

I went to Hoonah 114 times, Haines 115, Gustavus 78, Skagway 76, Kake 23 and Excursion Inlet 16. My charter to Sitka was the only time I visited there. In those flights I only had 5 weather turn backs because I'm a huge chicken-S. I didn't much care for being the scout and usually let someone else who was more experienced blaze the trail for me. I scared the crap out of myself a few times, contemplated landing on a beach once, and hoped all summer for a charter to someplace off airport but that didn't happen! Only a lucky few found Glacier Point! The folks I had the pleasure of flying and working with are some of the most memorable and finest individuals I've ever met. It's really impressive to see a great team come together and I'm sorry I have to leave, very sorry.

If you're looking for a challenge of both mind and body then I'd suggest coming to fly in South East Alaska. It will change you, hopefully for the better. I think however it has ruined me and I'll be back.

I love this place.

I had a meeting for work tonite with one of the bosses up at KDAB air traffic control. i wanted to share a few things with you guys that we talked about.

1. when atc tells you "Cleared to land", it does NOT mean you can descend. as he explained it, "cleared to land does not mean you can descend from your current altitude. what it means is that ATC expects the runway to be available/clear when you become established on the final". when given a cleared to land clearance, you should hear "altitude restriction cancelled" or "descent approved" before vacating your current altitude.

2. When atc tells you "cleared direct to the numbers", it means you can descend from your last altitude. when given this clearance you are expected to do just that.. fly direct to the numbers.

they explained to us that these are common mistakes made by students and instructors alike, but are usually disregarded by atc facilities. I found this interested, as when i heard "cleared to land" i assumed that it was ok to descend from my current altitude. guess i was wrong. anyways, still learning :).

Well, I've been listing out the pros and cons of this for days, but think some of my fellow JC'ers may have some better answers.

Currently, I am a college student, majoring in Commercial Aviation. I am just finishing up my CFI ticket and have 2 more classes to complete the requirements for the Aviation degree. I've already completed a minor in Psychology as well.
I throughly enjoy aviation, but I am not sure the Airlines is where I want to be anymore. I have a girlfriend, which I believe will turn into a future wife, and she has a daughter that I couldn't live without :)

I currently work part time as a mechandiser for a large bread company. They have offered me a position as a full time route driver. 5 days a week, 40 hrs ... weekends off... and the starting year salary of around 40k... with the potential for more cash based on route expansion. (Side note: some of the other drivers are making around 60K a year.) Full benefits, 401K, Holidays, Vacation and all that good stuff.

I've been concerned with the aviation climate as are most of us and the potential to get a job and with my instructor highlighting how hard it has been to find a job when your competiting against 500 other applicants I guess I am wondering if this is an opportunity that I shouldn't pass up.

So heres my thought processes
If I take the route position job, I would like to finish my two flight classes, all be it it will be very challenging, and graduating with my Commercial Aviation degree. My other thought process is to Graduate with a BS in General Studies, and a minor in Aviation and Psychology. I know that many people say that what you have you degree in is neither here nor there so I wonder if this is a good option ?

Or do I pass up this opportunity and finish the last two classes. Either way I wouldn't be finishing school until next August, but either way I will walk away with a College Degree.

So any words of advice for a fellow pilot ?? Thanks in Advance !

I am from the DC area and was looking at my options for a regional airline closer to home than a city like MEM. Piedmont is the closest regional in SBY. I have looked at their jobs board a number of times the past few years. Ive never seen them looking for dispatchers. They hire a lot of mechanics and FAs currently and were looking for low time pilots back in the big boom so there has been attrition in decent numbers in the company the past few years. Ive seen almost every other regional looking at some point.

PSA Airlines are similar in size to Piedmont and they are accepting resumes and were hiring earlier this year. How does Piedmont manage to keep dispatchers or does Piedmont hire from within like WN and FDX? Does anyone know what their pay is or anything about their dispatch set up?

Piedmont is one of most quiet airlines on JC for dispatchers.

Right now it is my understanding that Delta management wants to offer the Pilot group a 15%, or more, raise to ease the scope to around 100 to 120 seats per aircraft.
After talking with a few Captains some would give their first born for a raise. The NW group seems on board as do a majority of the Delta older pilot group. Right now the aircraft that comes to mind is the C series RJ. This is something I can see taking place in the next 2 or 3 years.

I guess I should know this but I can use some controller help here:

I was on my filed and cleared flight plan that included an arrival. I was 60 miles away and told to "expect the VOR 11 approach". Now the arrival swings me around to an in-line point along the final whereas the VOR approach brings me to the VOR, outbound, procedure turn to return.

I stayed on the arrival only to be yelled at for "departing from the approach route".

Please help: Is an "expect the approach" an authorization to fly the procedure or am I to maintain my last clearance until told to fly to a point "for the VOR 11 approach"?

Thank you, in advance......

The body of a woman believed to be in her 40s was pulled from the water near the plane.
The plane, a Twin Beechcraft Queen crashed at 11:53 a.m. According to the San Carlos Airport, two to three people may have been on board and the plane was en route to San Martin.
The San Mateo County search and rescue team has been called to the scene to look for additional victims.
People in small boats and kayaks initially came to the rescue.
Some sources are saying it was a Queen Air, and some are saying it was a Duchess. There is a Queen Air based in SQL, and BelAir has a fleet of Duchesses. From the picture, I'm very sure it was the Queen Air. Either way, very sad. This is the first fatal crash I can remember that actually occurred at the airport:(.

EDIT: Yes, it is a Queen Air.

Ok, I am 14 years old and I live in Greece. I have American Citizenship and as soon as I finish high school here, I will move to America.
I am trying to make a plan for the future. Please tell me which one you recommend.

1) Get my private in the summer before college, go to a University, study Aeronautical Engineering, then in one of the summers do the 90 day fast track program at ATP.

2) Go to University, study Aero. Engineering, finish college, then go to a local FBO and get my ratings.

3) Go to Embry Riddle and get my ratings there.

4) <insert your recommendation here>

Also, would Embry Riddle be worth it? If my resume says that I went to Riddle or another college flight school, will that mean anything to the airlines or will they consider it the same as going to a local FBO?

I appreciate any feedback you can give me.
