Under Secondary Education Results * Do I really have to put in all of my high school classes and grades? No flying experience required. Cathay doesn't say anything about having licenses

Hi guys, while this is my first post on the site, I have been around for a while just reading and gathering info, but I guess now I decided to join in. Anyway, I applied for the cadet program at the end of June to try my luck and now I'm just waiting. I was wondering how many others have heard anything if they applied and how long it took for them to hear back. Especially guys from the U.S. since it was just opened to all nationalities. Thanks!

Yea, I was told 8 weeks, which would be about September before I heard anything. Maybe they are looking at US applicants later.

What exactly are "concessionary travel benefits?" Are they the same as the nonrev privileges that US airlines have? I've heard rumors that CX makes standby passenger-employees buy ID90 tickets...

| This is true, our employee passes are roughly ID90 prices. They are also still paper tickets that must be printed in Hong Kong. No spur of the moment trips as ZED passes etc. must also be printed in Hong Kong.

| Old Skool | I just put 1 semester of my senior year. I think putting Junior and Sr. year of HS should be enough

I know 1 guy from the US and several from Canada have been called to the interviews in HK. Maybe it's what you put under interview location? Quote:
I would have love to put my college grades as well.

| Newbie | I applied on June 30 and waiting for my reply. Not getting my hopes up, like PGT says and from what I have heard Aussie and Hong Kong people as of now.

Wonder what the contractual commitment is? I know at Etihad it was eight years or paying back the training costs.

| I think the reason they want HS grades is that the grading system is entirely different to the American system. It is more like a British grading system. They want to see things like O levels and A level grades from what i understand about the Hong Kong grading system. These classes are more or less college level classes and you have to stay on an extra couple of years to take these classes/tests.

I applied about 3-4 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. I thought they would email/call you one way or the other right?

High school grades? Wow I'd be screwed if I had to present those. Yay for good grades in community college!

The cadet program seems to be the way future recruitment is headed here. No DESO/FO hiring forecast, but they have increased the number of Cadet courses to go through Adelaide each year. The program IS getting better. The union has been able to secure child education allowance and a housing deal probably isn't far off either. It will probably only start once upgrade to FO takes place though (3-4yrs typically) Those waiting on DEFO, will be waiting a while. If the union has anything to do with it, it will never happen again. It has caused too many problems for the company over the last few years, it would be surprising to see it happen again. By-pass pay issues, seniority issues... the list goes on. Having said that, Cathay do what they want and worry about it later. So anything is possible. At the end of the day, its a great job here in Hong Kong. Great lifestyle and more time off than any job I've ever had before. |

Hi guys, no problem. No, I joined as a S/O. The minimums requirements state you will need 1000hrs for S/O, but realistically guys that get hired generally have at least 3000hrs. I had over 5000 with 2000 jet hrs at date of joining. Other guys had heavy turboprop time and then others even from the air-force, some coming off fast jets. The cadet program is constantly running and Cathay are stepping things up a notch right now, I believe they are doubling the number of classes to go through each year (how many classes that is, I'm not sure). Anyone can apply, but they have said they want you to have a 'tie to Hong Kong'... whatever that means... I'm not 100% sure on when seniority starts for a cadet... I think it may be date of joining the course in Adelaide, Australia. The course is approx 14 months long 'down-under' then you come to Hong Kong and start aircraft conversion, which from ground-school to sim to the line, is give or take 2 months. Just came across this, hope it helps:http://www.askcaptainlim.com/index.p...ests&Itemid=75 Last edited by Minima-No-Contact; August 15th, 2009 at 07:11. Reason: Attach website |

I've finished my app - except for my HS grades then I can submit it, still waiting for them as I graduated about 15 years ago. I hope they will consider someone who already has a bunch of flight experience. (and is from the USA) I was hoping to go the DESO/DEFO way - but I would be happy to hit the reset button for the opportunity to work for CX. (which has been my goal since I started this whole aviation thing 10 years ago)

Is there an age limit to join this program? I couldn't find one and I am not in my twenties... I only have a Private, instrument and about 600 hours and decided to leave my Engineering career. I do have a good pay but I am really tired with it. Good luck to all! Quote:

No age limit for this one. CX doesn't care if you have 0 or 1000 hours, they hire personalities. They've picked up 18 year olds with no experience. (just what I read on various websites)
