Default August 1st deadline

First of all I am going to be an incoming daytona frosh.....

Yesterday in the mail i received a little white card from the Aerospace Science dept, it was a little survey about what flight experience i have. Riddle also wants copies of any ratings that i hold...at the end of the survey this message was present....

"Ratings submitted after August 1st will not be reflected in your flight course placement"

The problem is recently my instructor and I (I am in the 'just soloed' for the first time phase of my ppl training) sat down and decided to shoot for a checkride around the first of second week of August. I am worried that if i don't obtain and send a copy of my certificate to Riddle by August 1st, i will be stuck in the 'Commercial Flight 1" instead of "Commercial Flight 2" which i hope to be qualified for. Any suggestions?

I might be freaking out a big....card arrived today (Saturday) and i haven't even called the school for their response to my situation but if anybody had a similiar situation please let me know how your's turned out.

No riddle bashing please...last couple threads of inquiries about riddle by incoming students turned into threads that evolved into arguments about why riddle is/isn't worth the money ...... .

Thanks,
Mike McM

I'd call them before I started Full Scale Freak-Out. When do fall classes start? It's possible that you could show up before class with your rating, talk to you advisor, and try to get into a class that has openings. Just b/c you register for a class doesn't mean you HAVE to stay in it.

classes start August 30th i believe....orientation is like 3 days prior. unless i screw up my checkride i should have my rating by the time i leave cleveland. talking to my counselor would be a good plan....as long as the class i'm going to be signed up for before hand isn't set in stone i dont think i'll have a problem.

Won't the temporary certificate suffice?

I called and asked about this and the lady at Riddle said that they wont take into consideration any flying i've done up to my arrival unless i have the PPL certificate.

I believe most colleges are like this.

But the temp certificate that you recieve from the examiner right after your checkride IS your certificate...

The postcard said the deadline for submitting all previously owned certificates was August 1. My instructor and I recently sat down and estimated that my checkride would be around the first or second weeks of August. I'm wondering that if i submit a copy of my certificate after August 1st it wouldn't mean anything and i'd be stuck in Comm Flight 1. I'm probably worrying over nothing but I plan on calling tomorrow to clarify this policy.

Thanks for the replies so far

Well, on the plus side, it could be an easy A that you might need later on.

Yeah that's the funny part about Riddle. It costs $2000 now just to ENROLL in a flight course WITHOUT a ground school to spend like $6000 getting your Multi-Engine Instrument add on...someone's getting rich and flying their citation all over the place...

$6000? I spent $9500 on mine after finishing not .1 over syllabus time. So sad.

Assume the extremely elderly man with a big stick voice...

Back in my day it was only $6000 and we had to fly an airplane where the gear wouldn't come down on its own all the time and only 1 of the 2 propellers turned at one time because there weren't enough gerbils to turn both AND put the gear down.

The way I understand it, if your doing an Aero Science major,
upon arriving at Riddle, you must finish everything from your current certificate through Commercial Multi. CFI at Riddle is optional. If you have your private prior to coming, then you start working towards your instrument. Another possibility is that you can request to finish flying off-campus, however this is highly discouraged if your major is Aero Science, not su much a problem is your major is Aero Studies.

The only way I know of to fly off campus at Riddle and still graduate Aeronautical Science is to complete the FA399 flight course which is a CAMEL-Instrument transition course that they will milk you until you're broke in.

Aerospace Studies is far easier to get into these days and fly off campus, and believe it or not you're still the holder of a Riddle Degree, and you just saved yourself like $20,000 by not flying at Riddle.

Oh...and taking your private into Riddle with you is the best move you could make. I know so many 100 hour private pilots it would make your head spin. (That's $16,000 in Riddle talk). Just don't forget FA109, your typical "Riddleization" flight course which nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed.

I had the PRC Head of Safety as my instructor. You Riddle PRC guys can appreciate that.

That's funny. I never got my PPL (never soloed in fact) at Riddle and I only had about 45 hours. They dropped me because I was "making them look bad" because of how long it was taking me to complete their training.

And I was still paying them. The moolah was still rolling in. I guess that's one more thing in a list of things that makes some of the decision-makers there a bunch of bias buttheads.
