Riddle has a good Engineering program... You will be very overwhelmed trying to complete an Engineering degree while trying to get all of your certificates and ratings... I was in engineering 2 years before switching to Aero Sci and it keeps you busy. Your post says "Masters in Aeronautical Engineering"... Are you planning on getting both your Bachelor's and Master's? |

Engineer?! *draws a line* stay on your side Engineer boy... ![]() jk jk, Wow, thats one hell of a goal to do AE and get ur ratings. I would suggest getting them somewhere else while your at riddle for AE. Not only would it be more cost effective, but you'd be able to pace yourself better. I have an engineer roomate and another AS roomie, fact is we're all busy a lot of the time, so i cant imagine crossing over the two...it'd be some horrible task saturation. Anyways, best of luck in whatever u decide to do |

I am actually doing aeronautical engineering at Riddle starting in the fall, and I've since gotten my private, instrument, and multi ratings before going in. Many people have said the same thing as the above that you shoudl get your ratings seperately if you want to do engineering. I am going to probably get my commercials over this next Christmas break and my instructor ratings next summer. That way everything is seperated. It will just keep you on track. It's nice to set great goals like that but you want to be totally focused when pursuing something like aero. eng. and your ratings. That's my 2 cents. |

I didn't mean that I was planning to get my ratings at Riddle. I meant to say I was going to get them separately. Copaman, I forgot I had aksed the question in that post. Thanks anyways for the responses.

I have an aero engineering degree (from UT Austin, not Riddle, though Riddle has a very respectable program), and you will have a difficult time pursuing your ratings while doing enginnering. The degree is very demanding and loving aviation will not help you at all; you'll need to be very proficient at math, physics and computer skills (not just word processing and spreadsheets; most of your homework will require you to program simulations and such). You will also probably have to write more than the average liberal arts student; some people will balk at that and not believe me, but my Junior and Senior years I had to write at least 20-25 pages of technical documentation a week between projects and labs; also expect to do 2-3 in-depth group projects your last couple of years including long techincal reports (80+ pages) and several formal presentations. I got my private while doing my first year of grad school in aero, and I never finished the graduate work, if that tells you anything! Now that I'm working I have been able to fly more (income helps too) and have just finished my IR. In summary: its definately a good degree to have but there are easier things to have as a fallback, and you must be very smart or very dedicated to get the degree. I think it is pretty easy to find jobs with this degree, and they pay pretty well, but I don't know how easy it would be to find one if you've just gotten furloghed and haven't been an enginner for 10 years. Hopefully I'll never have to find out... |
