Hi everybody, I'm going in for an instructor interview at ERAU Prescott in a couple weeks. So far, I've gathered that the ground/oral portion is a mix of typical HR stuff and technical questions, but I'm still kind of at a loss as to what they actually ask of you. Of course there's not a PTS for the interview, so I'm kind of at a loss as to what to study. I hear that they're big on primary pilot knowledge, but that doesn't really help much. Also, what do the flight, written exam, and sim eval entail? Any insight here? Thanks.

Howdy, I'm sure the interview at Prescott is a bit different than over here in DAB...they may ask some mountain flying questions. Interview was half HR, half technical. Technical was mostly primary stuff, systems, aerodynamics (fundamentals of flight), and they had me teach lazy 8's. I don't remember much of what was on the written, but if you review the CFI written, it should be good prep. Sim ride was teach BAI, then two approaches, one partial panel. Study all the approaches in the surrounding area. They may do yours in the Level 6 sims, which is nice...it's exactly like the 172. The flight portion did not start until "standardization," well after the initial interview, which is essentially a small flight course with the "checkride" being your hiring ride. I don't think any of us were cut after we were accepted for standardization. Best of luck. -Brock Sargeant MEII

Cool, thanks for the help. I've been studying just about everything I can get my hands on, but I'll definitely dig into some systems stuff beforehand. I just went out and bought a suit today, and putting it on made this all seem a bit too real. I guess I should just relax and know that I have other job opportunities besides ERAU, but I'd really like the PRC job. Is the interview pretty laid back, or is it pretty strict and down to business? Oh, and what are the HR questions like?

My interview was pretty strict...basically like an airline interview. One of the team managers and the head of flight standards did my interview...the TM asked the HR stuff, the head of flight standards asked the technical Q's. HR Q's were the easy part...pretty typical. What are your strengths/weaknesses, have you had a problem with any managers before and how did you handle it, have you failed a checkride, if you saw a CFI doing something unsafe on the ramp, what would you do....that type of thing. About halfway through my teaching Lazy 8's, the chief CFI came in, watched a while, and asked me a few Q's as well. Interview was almost an hour. Just be yourself, brush up on the technical part, and you should be fine.
