Default Would it be logical....

I am looking at all the wild expenses everyone is dishing out in Embry Riddle. I was thinking about getting my Certifications from PPL to CFI at a local FBO then going to Embry Riddle or Purdue. So I can sneak in my Instructor and Multi Engine Certifications and Flight hours....

would would be the point? If you wanna do that you should look at ERAU's online degree program. Same exact degree all the Prescott and Daytona people get and you don't have to sell your soul to the bank for 20 years.

The difference in price between the extended campus and resident campus programs is crazy.

Basically:

On-campus degree = way, way overpriced. Not worth it, just ask all the alumni around here.

Off-campus = Surprisingly affordable and will allow you to "check the box" when the time comes.

Maybe Kellwolf will chime in on this, I think he just finished his riddle degree through the extended campus.

One class away, actually. They give you credit for your ratings up to CMEL (30-36 hours, I think), and that takes care of your "Professional area of concentration" credits. There's core requirements, but those are similar to your generic degree (math, english, physics, econ, etc), and there are a couple of aviation core classes (aviation law, aviation legislation). The rest are electives associated with your degree program. I accidentally am going to wind up with a management minor since I took so many aviation management classes.

The price is like $550 (or about that) per class + books. I actually found a lot of my books used on either eBay or Amazon, too. Federal loans pretty much covered the whole deal for me, but I did mange to get the Extended Campus scholarship. It's a whopping 1 credit hour's worth of money, and you can only get it once every 12 months. THAT was a big help.

Looking at the res campus in DAB, it was about $10K a semester PLUS flight training. So, probably closer to $20K a semester, and that was commuting from Orlando. Those are 2002 prices, so I'm sure it's gone up since then.

Honestly, if I had it to do over again, I woulda just finished my degree in whatever from Mississippi State instead of dropping out years ago. Good news for me was that all of those classes transferred to Riddle, and I CLEPed out of 4 more classes to keep my costs down even more.
