I know they do intersection takeoffs from Echo there, but I haven't heard of someone taking off on the taxiway. Maybe he was supposed to take off on 7L via Echo and misunderstood....

.... it's kinda hard to 'mistake' a taxiway for a runway though!... That was the instruction I believe, something to do with the runway / intersection depature. But jeeez! C'mon people! ~wheelsup |

[ QUOTE ] I know they do intersection takeoffs from Echo there, but I haven't heard of someone taking off on the taxiway. Maybe he was supposed to take off on 7L via Echo and misunderstood.... [/ QUOTE ] According to the grapvine, thats apparently what happened. The phrase was probably something like "N123ER, runway 25R at Echo, clear for t/o." I heard that the pilot even asked ATC to confirm this instruction which sounded wrong to him and ATC just responded with a "N123ER, affirmative", thinking the pilot was planning on taking off on the runway. Don't quote me on any of that, thats just whats been floating around. However, the lack of good judgement by a commercial student is somewhat concerning. Good thing nobody was on the taxiway. |

Maybe he'd just read the arrival procedures for Sun n Fun and figured they applied for DAB too. |

You might be confusing it with the student who tried to take off from 7R at Echo. She was told to taxi to 7R, which she did (but not the departure end.) Then she called tower ready to go and the controller looked to see an airplane at the departure end of 7R (not her.) She read back the clearance, taxied out, and then the controller saw she was trying to take off from 7R at Echo. For those of you not familiar with DAB, I think that's about 500'-600' of runway. The tower chewed her out, told her to taxi back to the Riddle ramp, and called Riddle ops. I've heard several people ask for intersection departures on 7R at Echo, not realizing what they're asking for. Sometimes tower will take a second to think about it and come up with some pretty funny yet irritated responses. I've taken off from 7R, only to have an airplane head straight for me on 25L. I've seen the airport come to a ground stop because a student pilot could barely speak english and he was up solo. If you stick around this airport long enough you're bound to hear and see some crazy and scary stuff. It's bound to happen in an area saturated with training ops. |

I found out yesterday that someone did indeed take off from Echo right in front of the Lynch Ramp.
