Default ERAU scholarship money

Hello,

I just received my admission letter from Embry-Riddle. I'll be attending in the fall majoring in aeronautical science. I was wondering how much the average merit based scholarships are. Do they give female students more money? As you all are aware, the cost is upwards of 40,000 for flight students. I have a 3.9 GPA and a 1200 SAT, and am wondering what type of merit based scholarship I can expect? I don't think my family will qualify for any financial aid. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks, Manda

Best bets for scholarships in your situation is the Ninety Nines or the Women in Aviation Organization. In my experience, ERAU is pretty stingy with their scholarship money. Example: I had a 4.0 and got $179 in scholarship money. Yeah, that won't even cover my books. Thanks guys.

Your best chance is on your test scores. I had a 2.8 GPA, with 1150 on SAT and 32 on ACT, and I got $10,000 per year on my ACT score. If you haven't taken the ACT, I would recommend it because I believe it is a lot easier than the SAT, and will save you and your parents a lot of money.

I actually had Riddle pay a LOT of money and they helped me get all sorts of financial aid.

Example...At Riddle I received the full Pell Grant amount, now at WMU, my situation hasn't changed one IOTA and now I don't qualify for it....either blame Western or blame Bush but either way I'm out a few thou.

Also I had received a Smithonian grant (through Riddle) and when I switched over to AS it didn't "go with me" so they just gave me the same amount as a "Housing Grant" and that was a few thou as well.

And I wasn't in 99's or WIA either. My GPA from HS was 3.2/4.0 and SAT was 1150, Good luck with it....Begging for money is fun!!

Okay, I gotta ask. How little do you have to make to qualify for one of these? I was basically on food stamps, and the gubment said I made too much money.

3.8 HS GPA and a 30 on the ACT. Unfortuantely, that was in 1993, so they tend to not look at that. Lesson to all you youngsters, don't drop out or you'll never be able to get decent financial aid again.......

Thanks for the help, I'll check on the 99's and WAI scholarships. I think the $1000 from Embry-Riddle may be the Alumni Endorsement Scholarship. If it is, I already contacted someone I know to fill out the form, hopefully that will add an extra $1000. If there is some other type of scholarship, please let me know. Thanks again!

Well I was still dependent on my parents...there were 5 family members and only my mother with a job to support everyone (my dad had become technically disabled with back problems and was wrongfully terminated), I believe she only made like $19-21K ....Whatever it was, for a family of 5 it wasn't enough.

I think partly it also had to do with the fact that my dad's situation was so sudden and right before I started college. Our income basically went from $50-60K down to less than $20 K pretty quick.

Probably why I don't qualify for it now...now I'm *used* to being poor.

Just go in and talk to your financial aid counselor and explain the situation. Mine fortunately lived in the real world and knew that not everyone who got accepted to Riddle could afford it and she bent over backwards to find me money. She was great.
