I am planning to start college september 2006. I am completly positive that i want to be a pilot and my parents are ok with it. I really want to go to ERAU or SLU but my parents advise me to get a non aviation related diploma.Up until the ninth grade i've been kinda sclaking off but after i am now one of the best students in my class. All this effort for me to succeed in aviation. So what would u guys and gals do if u were in my position. (The only reason my parents tell me not to go to ERAU is because they think that it may be hard to find work) Thank you very much.

your parents are right. Absolutely go for a non aviation degree. What if your airlines pulls a Pan Am, Braniff, Eastern, or TWA on you? You are pretty SOL without a degree in another field. (not to sound like a basher but: ERAU is so outrageously overpriced it makes me sick) |

Ditto what everyone else says. What else interests you OTHER than aviation? History? Science? If I had it to do all over again I would either finish my communications degree I started or go for the history degree. Right now, I have so many credits towards an Aero Sci, it would take more time and money to finish the non-aviation degree.

You're parents are smart. Feel free to email me, or have them email me, at doneikenberry@hotmail.com, if you/they have any other questions.

Good call on your parents part man. I came to Western Michigan University to do aviation and ended up leaving the program within a year. I decided it wasn't for me, and I already have my private pilots license so I figured I'd finish on my own. When I switched majors to political science and philosophy my parents told me they figured I'd end up doing exactly what I did, but they couldn't have told me that when I was 18 and just headed off to college. I was lucky enough to be going to a good state university that had more than just aviation. With that, you might want to give the aviation major a try but do it at a state school; that way you can switch majors easily without having to go and go through the headache of transfering schools.

Another option is if you want to get an aviation oriented degree major in something that is related but can transfer out. In my case Im currently majoring in aviation maintenance at my local community college and will eventually transfer to ERAU's DL program for Aviation Maintenance Management. A & Ps are sought out by more than just airlines because of our wide range of skills(Sheet metal, engine repair, welding, NDT, hydraulics/pneumatics, the list goes on and on for what is taught)and having a management degree will keep me from having to turn a wrench(although Id rather be turning wrenches than warming a seat at a desk). That is one way you can have your cake and eat it too. There are somedays I wish I just went and spent my money on flight lessons instead of being stuck on the ground, but in the long run this keeps me around airplanes and aviation related stuff, but also gives me options if my flying career backfires. The other thing you have to remember besides getting laid off is if your health fails you have absolutely no job you can use your education with if you major in Aeronautical Science. Listen to everyone here and get a degree in something other than flight, but if you want to, there are other "Aviation-related" options that will help you to.

Dont go to ERAU. Your parents are right, you need a non aviation degree. What if your health fails? what if your company goes bankrupt while your supporting a pregnant wife and two kids? Dont make the same mistake most do by going to ERAU. 53 percent of people who come to ERAU will eventually transfer. That number is riduclous when compared to other universities. I unfortunately made that mistake and am currently going through a very annoying transfer process. ERAU is also beginning a new Bulls*** program this year and 30 percent of flight students left at the end of the fall semester. ERAU is just in it for the money. Im just very displeased with the entire program and school and am leaving at semester, like most people here.

| ![]() I went through an identical situation. Listen to the people on this board, it is one of the few places where you will receive honest advice from those who have been there rather than a sales pitch from someone trying to separate you from your money. |
