As a person who suffered some moderate hearing loss, spend the cash and get a good high-quality headset.

If you can afford to fly, you can afford a quality headset. If you can't afford a good quality headset, don't fly.

The last set I purchased were DC 13.4's, but I'd HIGHLY suggest an ENC. But get a good ENC headseat that does a reasonable job (with the electronics off) of attenuating noise.

Lightspeed makes a pretty good ANR headset too. Most ANRs from major producers will not do you wrong. Telex, Peltor, DC, FlightCom, Sigtronics all make good ANR headsets. My suggestion would be to try as many of them out before you buy to see if they are comfortable on your head.

I've been using a 27 year old pair of DC H10-30's (my dad used them to learn to fly) and they finally bit the dust. I ordered the Flighcom Denali passive headset from Pilotmall.com, and for some reason they sent me the ANR version instead. I can't say enough about them- the audio is great, the ANR is incredible, and they're so light i forget i have them on half of the time, especially after suffering through lessons wearing the green head clamps that so many people love for reasons that are beyond me. Anyway, I would highly recommend Pilotmall.com- I can't believe they sent me a $600 pair of headsets for only $270- it was like winning the lottery or something.

i got the lightspeed QFR solo-C headset for $135 at marvgolden.com. It says it has the highest Noise Reduction Rating of ANY aviation headset at 28.7 NRR. It's under 12 oz. so its very light. Overall its been a great bargain for me, not wanting to pay $300 for DCs and not seeing what the big deal is about them (Ive worn a friends for maybe an hour of flight time. they were kinda clunky and fit like a vice).

I've been using a Lightspeed 20XL for 3 years now, best purchase I ever made. I had a pair of DC's before that and the lightspeeds are way more comfortable and convenient (2 AAs instead of expensive 9volt, lighter, nicer ear seals, cheaper, etc.).

See, I tried the Lightspeeds, and I hated the ear seals. I love my DC gel seals, though. Plus the Lightspeed sat so high on my head, I kept hitting the ceiling. It all comes down to personal preference. My DCs fit my head perfectly, yet they feel like a vise to some people. We had to get my wife a child's headset since most of the adult ones didn't fit right. Once again, it's whatever works. Oh, and use rechargeable batteries. It's cheaper in the long run.

One thing about the David Clark's, you can't beat their service or lifetime guarantee. I recently sent in a nearly 15 year old headset as I had slammed the cord in a door that pinched the wire. A few days later the headset was back, fixed of course, with new ear seals and a head cushion (the one I sent them didn't even have one installed), and all without a charge.
