Default Importance of a Riddle Degree

Hi,

Im currently attending Embry-Riddle in Daytona as a first year Aeronautical Science major. Im not liking the flight training so far and Im thinking about changing majors to Aerospace studies which is a program where you take three minors and make it a major. And then, Ill fly at one of the local FBO's

My question is how important is the Degree from Riddle that Says "Aeronautical Science" on it? Will this affect my ability to get a pilot job?

Or is the main factor that you have a 4 year degree and enough PIC time in the aircraft you want to fly? Does the type of degree and from where really matter?

Thanks

Eddie

it doesnt matter one bit. Your degree could be in Poetry for all the airlines care. ERAU however doesnt want people to know this tidbit of information.

To break it down further they dont care if you did part 141 or 61 training either.

You know what's funny? Is that I'm not sure if ERAU was part-61 or part-141 during my tenure there. Nothing wrong with part-61 -- after all, you need the time, right?

yeah, I was thinking about the amount of time I would get.

Im think the plan for me would be to try to get into corporate aviation, yes, I know its hard and networking is invaluable, so thats why I was wondering if the AS degree may help in getting a corporate job.

On the current sheduale of my private class, I will have the dual cross contry completead before I go home for christmas, hopefully, I would have private before summer.

Im averaging about 1 flight (2 hours) a week at riddle. I have done mostly simulator time here.

I have failed 2 out of the 3 flights Ive taken here. By not doing things to standards. The last flight for instance was ground ref and the plane was not 90 degrees to the road. So I Wanted to keep doing it till I got it right. I only got two tries and then had to move on to other things on the syllabus for that flight. I dont know if its my flight instructor or just the way riddle works.

Before I make the deccision I think im going to go talk to the training manager and go talk to the local FBO's and see how much time they could put me on for a week.

BTW, Doug, I found your website and Im using some of the info you provided in the "flying corporate" section in a research papper for my ASC 101 class.

Dude. Nobody cares what your degree is in. You'll save a lot of money and be able to fly more if you don't fly at Riddle. You'll have more fun, too.

[/ QUOTE ] Not sure about that one....DAB alumni and I had a blast (I even went to a couple of classes ) for the first year or two there, of course, like everything the novelty wears off after a while.

Enjoy your time there, but yes save your money, especially with this 142 stuff they're doing now.

If you really need the Riddle name on your degree, do like others and go Distance Learning or internet classes and get flight training at an FBO.

Edited for spelling

There are a bunch of small part 61 schools around this area. I've seen ads for many but can't name any. I know Ormand Beach has a couple as well as New Smyrna. I have a friend who flies out of Spruce Creek and says its a great program, I can get more info for ya if you want.

The only problem with these Universities is that their flight training is not what ends up being important, its the degree that is important. If u got the money i would suggest continue @ ERAU and go to a local FBO. From what math i have done their flight training ends up costing roughly about $40,000 @ ERAU and about $50,000 @ UND (which i think has better flight training). So its basically the degree where all ur $$$ goes.
Also something i noticed was that ERAU has just one small page where they give u a general overview of their flight training and there is not much info about that on their packages they send out. Whereas UND does that very well.

P.S: Get ur A.S and then get an online degree. Oh wait but riddle found a way to rip off there too. They only offer online t o students outside the US. In the US u either go to their Extended Campus or main ones, or maybe thas only for international students.

Wrong. I'm an online student (and so was EatSleepFly), and I live inside the US. Hell, I lived in ORLANDO and was doing online classes less than an hour away from the campus. In all honesty, though the Riddle degree is just a piece of paper much like any other degree from an accredited college. The only people that say they help you any more than another college degree are the marketting department at Riddle and Riddle grads that are looking for a job.

Still am, whenever I scrounge up enough to take a class. The idea- if I can ever get a halfway decent, steady job in this damn industry- is to finish my B.S. and keep rollin' on through to eventually get my M.S. in AeroSci.

As for the importance of a Riddle degree compared to any others? Zip, zero, zilch. Probably get you more snide remarks than respect in the industry. ERAU and its students' reputation is changing for the worse (ahem...CrAPT).

There's a possibility that if you come to the US for school you might have to go to one of the campuses for Visa purposes. Most of the international people I know taking courses are US military therefore US citizens.
