ERAU Question

Hi,

I’m new to the forums, my name is Sterling Wiggins. I'm 17 from Philadelphia PA. I don’t have any certificates or ratings, primarily due to the $$ factor, but have always wanted to be a pilot since I was a small kid. I sent my application to EARU Daytona last week for Aeronautical Science and I hope I get in *crosses fingers*. Anyhow, my question is, for any EARU students/grads .What was your overall impression? , would you do it again if you could?, what did you think of your campus(Daytona vs. Prescott), in retrospect is their any other route you would have chosen to take instead of EARU to become I pilot?

I thought ERAU was a very good education flying wise, but if I had to do it all over again, I'm afraid to say that I would have chosen a state college and flown either during the summers or after graduation.

But if you really want to go to ERAU and have the available financial resources, I highly suggest a non-aviation degree and flying on the side.

But that's *just me*.

Yea if you have the financial capability (I got quite a bit of scholarship money....so get good grades), its one of the best aviation educations you can ask for. Just comes with a hefty price tag so pick wisely.

I would also recommend a bizzare talent like being able to walk on water or being able to eat hot pieces of titanium or something just in case the people that get furloughed out of the airline industry if...*IF!!* the bottom ever falls out choose your fallback profession.

I have dibs on architechture.

In fact I would have flown on the side and gone to a good architechture school and gotten my 4 year degree in that so I don't have to pay some yahoo a billion dollars for legal plans when I want to build my house.

But considering my wait for IOE...me thinks about going to back to skool for more trayneng/ [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif[/img]

I agree with Doug... although the education concerning flight and EVERYTHING that could possibly be related to flight is good, I think I would probably go to a state school if I had it to do all over again. The amount of money I paid for the education was further out of my price range than I had thought.

Good luck on your decision, and yes, have a backup!

My backup plan if I don’t get into ERAU is that I apply to a few more 4 year programs or to go to a local school here and get a degree in Business Administration , or Information Technology and attend flight school at TTN or PNE.

Can I get my pilot ratings finished in 2 years??? at ERAU, by the way I havent sent in my apps yet, m waiting till after their information meeting OCT 17.

I dont know can you? dude we aint the damn admissions reps for ERAU. www.erau.edu look for a phone number then CALL THEM yourself and ask.

Well, if ya went to ATP you could get them done in 3 months, so I guess it's possible. Here's the questions, though: How much effort do you plan to put into it, IF you go to ERAU do you plan on taking all of your flight classes back to back, how much $$$ ya got, how's the weather, etc, etc. If you were asking is it POSSIBLE, Chris you've known the answer to that. And montanapilot's right, dude. You'd get better answers calling ERAU.

well I did call extended rampus at Long Beach, they said they had no internships, they prefer community college transferes itll cost 26K, for a BS degree and take 3 years to complete. I havent contacted the main prescott campus yet, however. I did request an application should be comming in soon, but yeah lol thnks mucho for being consistent with me.

Is that with or without the community college classes? I'll be done in about a year and a half and only be out about $8K counting classes that transferred and my flight ratings.

uhh without I think, and this is for the Extended campus not the online one. its $531 per class plus books and theres like 3 units per class and its about $150 per unit something like that. I need 120 to graduate.

Extended Campus and Distance Learning are the same price. The only difference is one you go to a classroom and the other you do at home.

You know, dorms, classrooms, fraternities and all that.

yeah I agree lol, but its just that Ive noticed a lot of the pilots in here are ERAU grads, you for example, FalconCAPT, MikeD, and a few others on there way. I am considering the state college option as well. but the Internship opportunities at ERAU seem realley well worth it to attend. my parents said if I want to go to ERAU I should attend JC (Junior/community college) first to knock off units so it'd be a whole lot cheaper, and to get my commercial done before I go to ERAU for the last two years. and Wm226 seays he thinks its a blast goign there, just not too good on their lack of girls. ERAU was a much different school when Doug, Mike, Copa, etc went there. There was once a time when most of the MBAs came from Harvard, but you don't see that anymore. They come from everywhere. I just can't justify spending $110K+ to get a piece of paper with a school's name on it.

I agree.. it was a different time back then!! When I went to college, I did the same thing your dad is suggesting.. go to community college first, get those first 2 years out of the way at a cheaper price...then i'd go to a regular university, major in something other than aviation and fly on the side!!

there's no reason to go into major debt if you don't *have* to...

I went to a four year state school at first, then I dropped out due to boredom. Luckily, all those classes transferred to ERAU. Community colleges now are about the same price as a four year state school in the early 90s, and that's sad......

As a Riddle grad, do some independent research and find out how many of those Riddle grads are would suggest doing it all over again.

It's a good school, but I wouldn't send my first borne there without a lot of changes to the curriculum.

I was talking CC today is the same price as Miss State was in the 90s. Tuition is outta control. If I had gone to community college in the 90s, I coulda done it on a McDonald's salary. Not now.

That's ridiculous! I've thought about going back to school, but when i look at the prices I feel like i'd be putting myself into major debt just to get another piece of paper...but anyways, it's of no consequence on this thread! haha

I paid $2000/yr for community college and got my AS. No debt and good credit to spare for a loan for higher training. The only thing is I wish that I took more classes from community college to transfer to ERAU online. Kind of disappointed ($200 difference per class) [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif[/img] that I have to spend, but still happy with no debt and the savings.
