Remember the only thing guaranteed in this world is the hot weather in ATL and humidity here. Everything else you have to work for and work hard

I think the point planediveguy was trying to make is that if you gave somebody a book with all of the answers and questions you might possibly be asked, (just like every FAA written test we take) you would expect the scores to be pretty darn perfect. If somebody bombs an FAA the test it shows lack of commitment in my book... Not trying to start anything, but I'm pretty sure that's the point he was trying to make... eh Fabio?

[ QUOTE ] If somebody bombs an FAA the test it shows lack of commitment in my book... [/ QUOTE ] So in your book what score would be "bombing" the FAA written? If you are given a test multiple choice test and you score perfect, does that mean you are better than someone who scored 80. I don't think that is the case. It just proves that you were able to "remember" more of the questions than the next guy. I personally place more weight on the Oral test becuase you don't have the correct answer sitting right in front of you. Being able to pick the right answer and explain the right answer are two different things. That being said, the only thing that a perfect score might get you, is a shorter oral exam. Other than that, I really dont see much difference between any passing scores. |

I bombed my multi-engine instrument checkride and also got a 62% the first time I took my FOI (Fundamentals of Instruction). I guess I'd be hosed! |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Some schools like FSI or MESA prescreen but I have yet to hear about an FBO who does. DCA doesn’t either. [/ QUOTE ] Again, get your facts straight. The only "prescreening" that I had at FSA was showing picutre ID and a valid medical, then a routine drug test. They do administer apptitude testing, but this is late in the syllabus and is to help prepare students for the cognitive and psychological tesitng they may see someday at an airline.. Your posts are like the national enquirer..mostly BS [/ QUOTE ] When I have called FSI some 3 years ago, they have expressed that "This is a professional institution!" with the appropriate tone (I guess everything else isn't) and I would have to go through some formal selection process, but we never went into it in detail as I have lost interest real fast after the conversation. If she was telling me BS so am I. I am glad you had something to jump on though. |

I definetly agree that test scores aren't everything. Some people are good test takers and some aren't. But don't you think that if someone were given the answers in advance you should expect a little more? |

I am sorry for not clarifying my ideas. If you understood what I meant in the first place you would realize that I was not questioning the candidates knwoledge, but the EFFORT they put and the level of commitment they show. It takes a few hours to learn the questions in those books and anyone that put the effort should get alt least an 80%. Or am I wrong? perhaps everyone that pays should get an instant pass, afterall who needs to know all that book stuff? there are better things to do with myy time like play video-games, hang out, etc... Talking about tests, the FOI was the worst. I felt brainwashed after managing a mid 90. Of course I did not care to read the FOI book in advance, just memorized the questions. My wife (a teacher) was pulling my leg with that for a while. After I have started to read the FAA book for the oral, it actually started to make sense.

I hated to have to memorize answers as I like to understand stuff... I was just lucky that FOI was not new to me. The same principles are used in teaching SCUBA... Hey montanapilot!... I thought that I needed and avatar... could not find the " I can't believe it is not butter" guy wearing a pilot's uniform though... |

I am pretty sure that planediveguy was refering to me. I think that he is definately right in saying that if you get a low score on something that you could easily get a high score on with a little studying, then you are showing a lack of commitment. Fortunately for me, I am an excellent test taker. Tests are my Forte. Now if I could only figure out how to do the other 99% of the stuff in school.

JEP, the comment I made was trying to clairify planediveguy's post, so his response was to both of us I suppose. I think planediveguy put it well when he said that the written test is a good guage of EFFORT, not necessarily knowledge. I also completely agree that the oral is where you prove how much you know. Like I said, I wasn't trying to pick a fight, just making a comment that if you have all of the answers ahead of time....

Fabio, Great avitar!!!!! I had planediveguy for the first half of instrument ground school. Very good instructor. Very knowledgeable and an all around great guy. Yeah the Gleim sucks but, it's just to get a decent grade and get it out of the way. It's better to get the CD/ROM version. I suck at bookwork, that's why I'm having sucha hard time with commercial. I'm more of a hands on learner, such as flight manuevers and so on. But I'm putting forth the effort to get in the books, so that I can do well on my stage checks and my FAA practical and written. The more effort I put in the better I do. Some people are just better at learning. I had several guys in my class when I fist started who are almost in CFII. They just learn faster and don't have to put in as much effort. |

[ QUOTE ] When I have called FSI some 3 years ago, they have expressed that "This is a professional institution!" with the appropriate tone (I guess everything else isn't) [/ QUOTE ] We had a DCA guy come in our Part 61 flight school, looking to instruct. He was talking to the skydive guys about part-time, and stopped in to talk about instructing for us. He used that same line on me saying that he went to DCA and not some "quickie mom and pop shop, that he learned professionally, blah, blah, blah." I felt like smacking him in his head and saying where are you at and what kind of job are you looking for. The skydive guys are desperate, so they are considering him as a part-timer, but he definitely had the cocky attitude, and I thought that was only engrained into us Riddle guys. Anyways, whether you go to UND, ERAU, DCA, where ever you may go looking for jobs, keep your audience in mind...don't insult "mom and pop flight schools" if that's where you're looking for employment. There are good and bad instructors at any type of place. Be the most professional you can at whatever you do! </rant> |

When I first started looking for CFI jobs, I had the "Hey, I'm a Riddle grad!" spiel. Soon, I learned that it wasn't such a good idea to go walking into an FBO with a "Proud to be an Eagle!" t-shirt on.

I can see that happening... I have seen the same attitude in young Scuba Diving Instructors... as soon as they get their cert they think that they are now the "Master of the Universe". One thing I learned after 14 years teaching SCUBA... and now I apply to Aviation.... It takes 10 years to begin to master your craft and to realize how much you still don't really know! We are students forever... in the sense that there is always something new to learn... Good post and good point... DCA and the other "BIG" Schools do teach to high standards... but ultimately we are still cookie cutter-low time pilots with the hopes of landing a good job and a life of experience ahead of us.
