Default Clay Lacy Aviation

Has anyone here flown for Clay Lacy? From what I've read, the little bit I know about the company itself, the "high profile" pax, and the variety of aircraft, I'm thinking it would be a good stepping stone into corporate aviation. Also, are there any charter companies that corporate flight departments tend to look fondly upon versus other charter companies? Thanks.

How much time do you have? I wouldn't set you sights on one company, I know guys there and it's tough to get on right now.

I've heard Clay Lacy is a mean guy.
Besides that their setup at Van Nuys is nice.... They have some nice planes going in and out of there.

Not enough time to even worry about it right now. Just wanted to see what is out there so I can set some goals.

I've met him a couple of times when he stopped in for fuel. He didn't seem like the most friendly person, but at least he did speak to me. Maybe he is one of those people who are nice on TV and not so nice in person.

I don't know anything about his background except that he is one of the 928 United SCABS on the "US Master Pilot Scab List", aka "Jumpseat Protection List".

Clay Lacy writes alot of articles for Professional Pilot magazine ( mainly a corporate pilot magazine ). I've always enjoyed reading them as he blends alot of technical and practical knowledge. His bio says he holds 25 type rateings, every thing from a DC3 to a 747. He's a retired UAL Capt. and has a FBO / Charter Company in CA. He caters to the LA crowd.

Professional Pilot rag is a joke. First off, nobody actually pays for the thing, FBOs, pilots, and others in the industry get it for free. Then they write about some "questionable" operators such as Northtrop-Grumman, etc... I love the articles about crews flying to Europe, catching a nap the airplane and then flying back. Or running a flight department out a car trunk. Of course they make these places out to be great places to work.

[/ QUOTE ]Those department profiles, good bad and indifferent, quote the principals of the company and the pilots who work there. Are any of them going to say something bad about their employer for large-scale publication? I don't think so. Therefore, a discriminating reader must look beyond what is written and draw their own conclusions. No matter what anybody says about the place, I'd never go to work at a company that would make me fly a Lear 35 from Reno to London then sleep in the cabin! And judging by the mail Pro Pilot got the next month, I'm hardly the only one who feels that way.

I used to read Professional Pilot when I was a regional pilot and it usually made me want to pull my hair out. But then I got it for free so it really didn't matter.

I do think it's horribly slanted towards owners and against professional pilots even though it's named "Professional Pilot".

Take a peek at most of the letters to the editor.

Hmm...jetcareers is a website, plenty of good and free websites to read. As an American it is my choice to not like it, read it, and then complain to anyone who will listen.

Yeah, putting the aircraft on charter is a downside, but that's not the reason. Turnover is the result of the problems, not the problem itself. I'm not going to go into details, but their practices were both illegal and unsafe. To be fair to Northrop, they did clean house over there...everyone that was upper level in that flight department is on the street.
