Hello ladies and gents Is there any info about contract flying and how to get into the business/ how to start, legal issues, etc. I have a friend that flys for Kodak in ROC and he dropped the idea in my head, so I'm running with it. Dario |

Get time in type, get your type rating, and network network network. The problem is you must be insurable on their policies and they must know you and your piloting skills (from what I've been told ).I've been told you must have some very good networks in place, have a very good business mind, and have some cash to keep your type ratings up to date, etc. There are some web sites out there that have info...sorry, too lazy to look them up, but there are some web sites for contract flying. Good luck and let me know if I have anything wrong about it. TX |

I did the contract thing for a little while but got out of it becuase I simply wasn't making enough money - and I was charging $850 a day plus expenses!! It can be a rewarding business but it takes a huuuuuuuuge amount of effort to develop. The expenses are unbelieveable - to start out with you have to have a type rating with experience in the aircraft or you might as well forget it! After that, you generally have to be at least 12 month current from FlightSafety(or similar)...recurrent even on a light jet can run $10,000 plus...don't forget about insurance costs, business costs, advertising, marketing, etc etc - it never stops. It can be a great business/lifestyle but very hard to break into and make anything out of....go to www.pilots4rent.com for some more info. There is also a fairly new organization called Independant Business Aviation Contract Professionals Association - or something like that. Their website is www.IBACP.org Jason

A Pilot that I know is going to start doing contracting work in a few years. Hes flying GV/IV and Hawkers right now, so he already is type rated on those aircraft. He told me a GV contractor could be looking twoards $1000 a day. Personally, I wouldnt think starting with contracting work is more expensive, because you have to get type rated in that certain aircraft. If you start flying corporate, then go to contracting, seems more resonable to me. Just my 2.

I'm typed in a Citation II, but from what I can tell, that was the easy part of this possible venture. Fields of dreams - If I build it, will they come? Dario | |

I can tell you that they will absolutley NOT come!! That's not to say that the business isn't there but don't expect to sit back and have your phone ring off the hook...it's just like everything else in life - it just depends on how well you market yourself and how much energy you're willing to put into it! You have some things working for you - namely the fact that you have a type in a very popular jet and the fact that you live near a major airport making it easy to get to alot of different airports with a 1 leg shot... If you're seriously interested in doing this then shoot me a PM - I'd be happy to share to things I learned along the way Jason
