What would you guys think about double majoring at University of Central Missouri? UCM is extremely cheap, tuition at something around $3,800 for instate. I would major in Aviation, as well as something like History, English, or maybe even Political Science. Would you just recommend doing one major at an instate school, and fly at an FBO still? Which will most likely be Missouri State University in Springfield.

I went to CMSU, er, UCM. I had some friends who double majored in Aviation and Spanish, so it's possible. They've got a good aviation program. But if I had it to do all over again, I'd get a business or engineering degree and fly at the FBO on the side.

Why not get a double major in business or engineering and aviation? That is what I am thinking of doing, but I am planning to do it at UND. Has anyone done anything like this? | |

I went to CMSU/UCM I majored in Biology and got a minor in Aviation technology. I had all of my ratings and got hired at RegionsAir right after graduating One year later I was working for SkyWest. UCM may not be the greatest school in the world, but it's not bad and I don't think it really matters where you go to school as long as you have the social ability to interview well. UCM is alot of fun though, if you like to go out.

Personally, I would double major in Pro Pilot and English or Spanish...but that's just the kind of person I am. Besides flying, I thoroughly enjoy reading good literature, writing, or learning/speaking Spanish. It's all about your passion and not letting anything get in your way. Just because there's a job market out there in engineering or business doesn't mean you have to persue that; follow your heart and do what you wholeheartedly love. Robbie

I was at UCM for a year, where I was an aviation major, with a music minor/possibility of a major. I enjoyed flying there, but the weather just got me slowed up a ton. For a while, it was too much, between flying, class, and band practice/rehearsals/concerts. If you went into a 2nd major that doesn't require a bunch of time, it would be possible. But something that requires significant practice outside of class time is going to be a bunch to do, IMO.

| If you can, double major or at least minor in something else besides aviation. It will open many other doors for you. Also get all your certificates’ as fast as you can because it will allow you to fly on the side while you finish both majors. If you graduate a year later than everyone else then so what. You will be more hirable because you will have more flight time. You might as well work on another major while building more flight time. If you get moving on the certificates’ you might have 1500 hours or more by the time you are all done. Best of Luck! |

I would suggest getting the flight ops management degree instead of the pro pilot degree. You still get to do the flying and can do as much as you want, but it also includes more business and management courses.
