Default Military vs Civilian

I don't want to join the military for pilot training, mainly because I have been told you have to sign up for 7 years if you want to fly. After 4 years of college, I really don't want to have to wait another 7 years to start gaining senority. I have also had several family members killed in action, and I'm not sure I like the sound of that either. I have been planning on getting all my ratings in college and going the civilian route. My question is, do I have any real chance of flying for an airline with no military experience?

Absolutely, there are many civilian airline pilots these days.

Not to come off as mean, but with that attitude, you would not make it in the military.
Sounds like the civillian route is for you

Not to come off as mean, but he did say he had several family members KIA. Who's to say whether or not he could hack it in the military.

That is very true and I salute the sacrifices his family made. But the first thing he said is he doesn't want to fly in the military. The military is the not the place you want to be if you don't really want to be there. There are plenty of people who want it and bust their ass to earn it. Also, you are there to serve your country, not to build time. In my opinion, that is the wrong attitude to have.
But that's just me....

I understand your point of view, sorry if I came off wrong. You are right, you definetly do not become a military aviator to earn hours.

Do you ever fly out of LUK? If so, have you discovered the free slush puppy machine yet? I floated a run out of there for a week and had one every night haha.

To his credit he's coming here for advice... in that light his attitude seems pretty good!

Seven years of virtaully guaranteed job security is nothing to thumb your nose at, bro!

Plus, keep in mind that the job you'll get fresh out of college, if the airlines are still briskly hiring at that point, probably won't be somewhere you want to build seven years of seniority with.

Opinion only!

Verry true. Thut, I didn't mean to come off snappy. I read it again and I think I came off wrong. I apologize. And yes, props to you for asking for advice.

I have nothing against the military, and I am definately not snubbing my nose at military training. My aunt married an airforce pilot. He was killed in a crash. She then married his best friend, also an airforce pilot. He crashed and died. My wife's grandpa was killed in vietnam. I could never put my wife and son through that kind of worry.

What is that supposed to mean? Are you saying that my family is not capable, that they died because they could not "hack" it? I posted on this forum because I wanted to know if I could be a pilot. I dont want to join the military. My bad. I wasnt aware that if you don't want to join the military you are a sissy with a bad attitude. I never said anything bad about the military. In fact I idolize military pilots, but its not for me. I think you have a bad attitude, and that you need to relax.

Whoa whoa whoa, hold on. I think you may have accidently misread that.

I think Flysher meant to point out that because you had already had losses in the family, you might be understandably reluctant to join an armed forces service.

I think that he then meant to seperatly say that there was no way we could know weather or not you could surivive and thrive in the military. We dont know you, so noone here can make any judgement either way.

Im sure it wasnt meant to be an attack on you our your family. Just the way it was formated could lead to an accidental misunderstanding.
