Arrrggghhh!!! I can't believe it but I could not answer simple lost comm procedure questions. Rest of the oral went fine, In fact we sped through it. I really goofed up my emergency procedures and I just don't know why. The DE said I can come back as soon as possible, talk about lost comm for a few minutes, then go fly. I never thought I would botch a checkride. Can someone tell me its' OK and they made it fine to a professional career with a botched ride? |

I seem to remember a certain ex-trucker busting a ride or two along the way. Head up and learn from it man.

| The thing that what would be held against you is if you were unable to recover and pass the subsequent checkride. One of the cognitive tests at Southernjets is set up to have you fail it repeatedly. You are graded on how fast you recover from the failure. At least they did when I interviewed. We all make mistakes and screw the pooch. The consumate professional puts the failure behind them and moves on, while learning the lesson of the failure. For what it's worth, I failed my first type ride at ASA and that was three types ago. If the subject comes up in an interview, just tell them why you busted, what you learned from it and how you used it to improve yourself.

AVE F / MEA (Avenue F to the MEA), my brother. I busted the CFII initial first attempt with the FAA back in December doing a partial panel VOR/DME approach. I remember taxiing back in and thinking to myself...."Man, maybe I am just not cut out for this." But then, I got back up and dusted myself off and asked when the soonest time was he had open to go back and knock it out. Got it the second time. I know the feeling. Sleep on it, and go back and learn everything there is to know about lost comms while IFR. You'll feel totally different tomorrow about it. Once you go and pass the exam, you will really feel totally different about it in 2 weeks time. I can tell you that I have a lot of respect for instructors that have busted a checkride before. That is, because they have overcome that obstacle and can sympathize with your experience.

It's a crappy feeling, but in the scheme of things its just a small hurdle and you'll be on your way.

You now have an excellent story to tell interviewers, how you overcame adversity when you failed a checkride... and you will be able to talk about what steps you took to correct the situation while taking responsibility for you own actions. Seriously... your future airline digs that sort of thing. It's no biggie and when it comes to failed checkrides/PC's it's something the grand majority of folks go through at least once. Chin up... go back and git 'r done! Bob

| It's going to be okay, though! So, you know the part that you have to review a little more, and you'll pass this next time with flying colors! |

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement; it was exactly what I needed. All emergency procedures have been thoroughly reviewed and I'll be getting with my instructor today to have the missing knowledge area reviewed and signed off. Hopefully get scheduled with the DE again quickly. |

Determine route: Assigned Vectored Expected Filed Determine altitude (pick the highest of the three): Assigned MEA Expected I busted my CFI initial too, and was quite pissed at myself. I think when this happens it just makes you work harder. |
