Today I took my CFI-A Initial Checkride. 1-20-06 15G Ohio I was very nervous and even had some stomache discomfort the night before and that morning. I had attempted a CFI-Instrument Initial CFI checkride a year ago (to the day, as it turns out), I failed the oral and I was not able to retest because I had to leave out of state for school. Poor planning on my part. (the failure was my fault too. I had a ahole examiner, but I wasnt prepared as well as I should have been either). Anyway, I was not confident in myself but I knew I had prepared and just told myself that I know that I am ready, even if I dont feel like it. After he collected the required documents, we got started. He opened up with FOI. I nailed it. Question. Response. Question. Response. bang bang bang. After the first 10 or so that I answered without hesitating and all correct, he made a joke about wondering about how I was able to get a copy of his questions :}. Anyway, after I answered every FOI question correctly without hesitating (except for 2, where I gave some non FAA answers), we moved on. Next was regulations endorsements, airspace (equipment requirements, pilot requirements, cloud/vis, Next was lesson plans. Presented lesson on lazy eights. said I did an excelent job. Asked me to explain lift. didnt get into too much detail. Systems--landing gear, what to do with overspeed prop (I said, reduce power, prop control--he said, that didnt work now what...was looking for "raise nose to put load on prop to slow it down..i got this on accident, I said raise nose, and hes like GOOD....what he didnt know is that I was going to keep talking and say raise nose to slow airspeed...), not much else. on systems. Why is it important to do CG for before take off and another one for landing, and for gear up and down. hrmm what else..im missing stuff here but these are the things that stuck in my head. Oh yea, naming stuff on sectional. straightforward. Once the first bit was over and I hadnt missed but maybe 2 or 3 questions (and not any major ones), I could sense that he lightened up a bit and was happy with my performance. This relaxed me as well. Anyway, He said that his CFI initial orals usually last 8 hours and quote "your oral only lasted 3 because you were the best CFI applicant ive had in a very long time". he then thanked me for preparing so well and making his job easier and then we got some weather and he asked me to decide if we can go or not. It was 2500ft ceilings, so i got a discont. and will take the flight portion this monday. Yippeeee. Im so glad that this oral is done with and that I am very close to getting this block out of the way. After I failed my CFI-I (taken as my inital) and never went back, it became this huge weight that I made bigger than it really is.

Congratulations! I did my CFI Initial about a month ago. The oral was 3 hours, like yours, but it felt like 8 !!!

Thats great. I think the oral is hardest part. I took my CFII and MEI back in September. I took both rides the same day and it was a very long day for a old guy. I have a student getting ready for his CFI were getting ready for the oral part now. I had forgot how much studying I did to get ready for the initial CFI. I think it was repression.

"I think it was repression" Haha, my brother and I (he is also training for his CFI, his ride is tomorrow) used to make jokes like that about the FOI. Arrggg how I hate FOI! 1950s psychology. I guess a lot of it is true, but I disagree with some things...for example, the FAAs definition of learning. They say learning is "a change in behavoir as a result of experiance". But who says I have to change my behavoir just because ive learned something? I might choose to ignore it.
