Partial Panel Goof

I failed my inst checkride yesterday, messing up the partial panel VOR approach. I only have to go back to get this approach, everything else went well. I thought I had this down in training and flew the approaches in practice pretty well. I think it was a case of nerves but am wondering if anybody has any useful hints that helped them through the partial panel.
