Didn't know if anyone out there goes through the Wichita FSDO for any checkrides, but thought I would post this to help some one out. I took my initial CFI checkride with them on Nov. 16th. Although they were kind enough to invite me back for Round Two, it was one of the best checkrides I have ever taken. To my suprise I had TWO examiners in the oral and in the aircraft. Both asked questions and both critiqued the flight. My examiners were Bill Davis and Micheal Tevis, both were excellent examiners. Here is how it went ORAL -Basic information (airworthy plane, certificates, required endorsements for the CFI Test, logbook, ect) -They told me they would be going through the PTS and asking questions, and if I had any questions to just ask. They really put me at ease and it was alot less intimidating than I thought. -They started with the FOI, not to much stuff in this area, know the basics. -Aeromedical Factors, Hypoxia, DCS, ect -Talked about training a student pilot, what considerations, what to look for -They went into Aerodynamics in detail. Vg Diagram, turning tendencies, adverse yaw, everything listed the AFH on aerodynamics. -Stalls, Spins, awareness and avoidence -Lesson Plans, maneuvers, weight and balance (in detail) and airspace. The oral took 2:15, the examiners were excellent. If they wanted somthing explained in more detail they would ask. If you got what they were saying, they would tell you that you did and excellent job of explaining it to them and that was it. Flight -They helped me pre flight the aircraft and asked system questions on my Bonanza F33A basic prop governer questions, landing gear, flaps, trim and fuel. Nothing to difficult. -He had me teach him how to start and taxi and aircraft. -We departed KICT and they helped with flying out to the practice area, since it is busy airspace they helped navigate to an area west of the airport. -Started with steep turns, I demonstrated and then talked him through one. -HELL checks before everything!!! THEY WILL FAIL YOU!!! -Lazy eight -Chandelle, demonstrate and teach one (The examiner would make purposeful mistakes and it important to verbally point them out, he blocked my rudder and was uncoordinated as he approached stall, low airspeeds during turns, uncoordinated while flying ect.) -Power off stall to the first aerodynamic indication (not the horn) -Cross controlled stall to the first aerodynamic indication -Emergency Descent with Emergency sim landing -Turns around a point -Eights on pylons - FINALLY he asked to see an S-Turn, he said it would be the last maneuver before landings. Sounded good to me. I immediately got complacent and in the first turn dropeed 150 ft. OUT OF STANDARDS!! I couldnt beleive it. He told me that I had failed and that we could continue with the landings or call it a day. -We continued with the landings. -Soft field followed by a soft field takeoff -Short field with a short field takeoff -Switch runways with a go around -180 Power Off accuracy Landings looked great. After we got back to the FSDO I was still in denial, hoping that becasue the flight went very well they would everlook that slight altitude deviation. They said the flight went very well and that they would have no problem giving my cert. but I would have to come back and complete and S-Turn. I thought, for sure, that there must have been somthing else to contribute to the failure becasue the S-turn did seem to be enough to fail a CFI. I asked if there was anything else I could have done better. They said that the S-turn was all they saw. They had an excellent debreifing period, they asked what I thought about the test and any ways they could improve. They said the oral went great and the flight went great. Like I have said several times before, both examiners were very nice people. They stated thier expectations up front and they offered thier help with checklists, looking for traffic ect. Tues I get to fly back to ICT and perform the worlds most expensive $-TURN. Any question feel free to shoot me a message. I'd be more than willing to help.

"It's part of the ritual hazing process" HAHA....shades of Animal House but with the FAA. SPANK..."Thank you sir, may I have another" Flippen FAA man. I don't know what to say. After 28 years of being a pilot I just try to avoid eye contact...or any kind of contact, with the Feds. Unfortunately, I got a 757 type ride coming up in April.... You should have seen me when I went to the FSDO after doing my last Gleim CFI renewal. Inspector: So, you fly for UPS? Me: Ummm, yeah. (trying to not make eye contact) Inspector: Do you do much instructing these days? Me: Ummm, no....I mean, yeah....I mean, well....I wish I could do more (trying not to make eye contact) Maybe I could volunteer to help with the wings program (made eye contact, he was happy) Inspector: An old friend of mine is at UPS, he's the chief pilot in Anchorage, you know him (says the guys name, everybody totally hates this guy) Me: Oh yeah...old so and so, what a great dude. I know him well.... Just play the game and try not to make waves. Sorry for the rant. |
