Hello everybody.Been lurking for quite some time here and have seen lots of useful information.Thought I would say howdy and see what kind of input you guys could give me..Im a commercial pilot:sel, mel, instrument with about 350 hours.Planning on completing cfi ratings to build time.Afterwards, regionals, maybe freight.Would like to end up in corporate.I would consider staying with a regional, making captain someday.I am 48 and still have my dreams.I know the economy is bad right now, and the aviation industry is in a slump, but I am staying in a positive attitude.I am burned out with my industry, being a business owner for over 20 years, and seeing my finances ravaged the past 4 years. Ready to make a change. Sorry for the long initial post.

Welcome to JC! I read on here there was some guy in his 50's that was in American Eagle's ground school so it's never too late.

I'd exercise extreme caution if I were you, especially if your retirement savings are not in good condition. Consider very carefully your retirement goals and the fact that you're going to make very little money over the first few years of your new career. You've definitely got a leg up since you've already got your ratings in hand; if you were starting from scratch and looking to take out a huge loan to go to ATP or someplace, I'd advise against it.

Heard of a guy that was hired at XJT at 56. He may have been a career changer or a DL early out, but none the less he had less than 4 years at the airline at the time when he was hired. The CA was less than half his age. With the passing of age 65, it may be possible to get hired at a regional past 60. If it what you really want to do, go for it, But as Aloft said, make sure you can afford it. I'm sure you have considered your finances, but if not do that. Make sure you can afford living on 20k take home your first year at a regional.

I admire people going after their dream as I have put mine on hold for awhile. This economy makes a person stop and question everything. I wish you the best of luck. |

go for it. i had a quest lecturer come in to my public relations class today to talk about his lobbying job. one of the things he said that stuck with me was when he was talking about how he got started. he told us to "find something you love to do, then find a way to get paid to do it". i can't wait to get payed to fly. i can not think of anything better i would like to do as a career. good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I'm 51, retired with a pension earlier this year. I'm not really looking at the airlines, Instructing yes, freight maybe, charter and corporate would be great. Go after what you want, just don't borrow money to do it. ![]() Bill
