Default How did you obtain Multi Time

Hi everyone,

I am planning on starting flight training when I graduate this winter or maybe in the spring. My question is this though. I want to go to my local FBO(richmor) but they do not have any multi aircraft. What did others do to obtain their multi time. I was planning on taking out a 10K loan to finance my private and instrument because that is the only way I will get started in a timely fashion but will be working full time also. Just looking for suggestions or comments. Thanks everyone.

I got my MEI (Multi Engine Instructor) cetificate and instructed for 200 hours in a multi. this is by far the cheapest way, infact you get paid to get your time.

I had a student that wanted me to teach her to fly in her newly-acquired twin. So, she sent me away with her credit card in hand to obtain my multi-engine ticket.

Then, to get me enough multi PIC time to get my MEI, she bought me a plane ticket and sent me to New Mexico to pick up her newly-acquired Twin Comanche. After she paid me by the day to fly it back to Middle Tennessee, she sent me away again, with her credit card, to get my MEI.

Later on, I scammed a few hundred more hours by getting paid to fly freight.

I flew about 20hrs of my commercial/IR training in the schools twin. If you do it this way you end up only paying ~$100/hr more than you would otherwise. Otherwise you will end up having to buy blocks of time for $200/hr (not sure what the going rate is).

As far as training goes, I really enjoyed my pt.141 experience. Some of the benefits I've enjoyed have been getting to know my check pilots really well, having more than a handful of aircraft and there are usually instructors willing to go up if yours is unable too. You also don't "Fail" check flights

My first 78 hrs of twin time were as a rental pilot. I got my PPMEL, then Commercial, then MEI (over a number of years) all as a renter. I normally budget $400/month for flying so when it came to flying the twin, I just flew it less hours than I normally flew the singles (but still $400 worth). It's the same deal when I fly gliders.

By hanging around the FBO I got a free .7 one day when they had to take the twin in for maintenance. I was working on my commercial SE and my instructor (who was also a MEI) had to move the airplane. He put me in the left seat and let me do the flying since I had a PPMEL at the time.

I also did some volunteer flying for Angle Flight in the twin as a rental pilot. I had to pay for it all, but every dime was tax deductable. In the end, that made it just a little more expensive than flying a C-172 for personal reasons (that weren't tax deductable). Unless you itemize your tax deductions, this probably won't be of much help to you, but who knows. That's how I did it, and that's what you were asking.

Personally, I'd encourage you to seek solutions where you didn't have to borrow money to get your tickets. But that's just me. Maybe you could get a second job and use all the money from that job for flying. Then when someone asks you how you got all your ME time you can say "I delivered pizzas for it" (or whatever). I had a roommate who took a big loan to get his PPL, then sat around for 2 yrs not flying because his loan payments took all of his spending money. I'd hate to see you go through the same experience.

Blue skies,
Rob

I just ran into a guy that had a atwin and asked if I could ride along. Eventually, he let me do the 3 solo TO/LNDGS to get multi current, then I could log some PIC time!!!! He introduced me to another guy who had the same kind of plane (who was NOT a pilot) and I had a new job!!!!

Then one of my students bought a multi, and needed an MEI. I paid for gas in their machine and off I went.

It's all about WHO you know!

Through PMEL add-on, CMEL training, and an MEI. . .that's how.
