I am 20 years old; I'll be 21 in August. I plan to obtain my PPL this summer and while finishing college (Business major @ 4yr Univeristy) I want to build up my hours till 80-100 in a Cessna. I have 2.5 years left of college and then plan to go to work FULL-TIME somewhere. I am seriouslly considering TSA (transportation security administration) at Armstrong In'tl airport in New Orleans. The money is good and while living with my mother I believe I can save up a great deal of money since they pay $25k-$30k off the bat. I have no girl-friend (haven't found that special person yet and do not have plans to get married until I get where I want to be). So that doesn't tie me to any obligations. Let's estimate my age at approx 26 after graduating and completeing 2 years off full-time work. I finish my ratings by choosing a Pro course somewhere (probably Ari-Ben). Become CFI and rack up some hours. Apply at a Regional (will move wherever necessary) because I want it that bad. From there hopefully end up at a major one day. From people who have been in my shoes, can my plan actually work? If need be I will get a loan, what ever it takes to fly a jet I will do. There is nothing else I have wanted more since I was 7. |

[ QUOTE ] what ever it takes to fly a jet I will do [/ QUOTE ] Jets are sooooo cooool. Man, I'd get allll the chicks if I flew a jet. Not. Relax, finish your training, get and stay employed and enjoy the ride. Fly whatever you can. If you start flying a jet right off the bat after you instruct or whatever, what else are you going to have to look forward to? I'm sure the novelty wears off after a year or so. |

Ranch4x4 -- If it's what you really want to do, pursue it. Better to go for it and find out it's not what you really want to do than to always wonder "what if?" Some may denounce your wanting to work for the TSA, but if it'll pay the bills and further your aviation education, have at it. Plus being government it'll come with some nice benefits. Just do everyone a favor and don't PFT/PFJ. |

You can try to plan your life out until you're blue in the face. 99.9% of the time things won't go the way you expect. [ QUOTE ] I have no girl-friend (haven't found that special person yet and do not have plans to get married until I get where I want to be). [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, we all start out that way. Then........WHAAAAM! "I'm in love!" "She's the one!" "This time it's different!" [ QUOTE ] Let's estimate my age at approx 26 after graduating and completeing 2 years off full-time work. [/ QUOTE ] Let's estimate my age at approx 54 when I get hit by a bus. [ QUOTE ] I finish my ratings by choosing a Pro course somewhere (probably Ari-Ben). Become CFI and rack up some hours. [/ QUOTE ] Sure, why not. I've heard of a couple people doing that. [ QUOTE ] Apply at a Regional (will move wherever necessary) because I want it that bad. [/ QUOTE ] You and like a bazillion other people. [ QUOTE ] what ever it takes to fly a jet I will do. [/ QUOTE ] Somewhere, a gulfstream academy representative just had an aneurism. Sorry to come off as such a downer, I know that you're just looking for info. The truth is that there are tons of people out there who will beg, borrow, and steal to get an airline job. Lately it has kind of made me sad because it seems like everyone wants to be an airline pilot right now rather than become an aviator through time and experience. I'm not an old salt or anything, but I have learned that trying to plan out your life is a waste of time. It's good to have a direction to move in, but realize that your priorities can and will change over time. Keep on plugging away at the certificates and hours, you'll get there. Do yourself a favor and don't miss out on life along the way. |

You're in love, then the tramp leaves you for a fat-a$$ or a dude with more money, or some weirdo that races cars like he's a freakin' 19 year old punk. After that, your ##### is on the curb and you're looking for a place to live. Meanwhile, she's living life just fine, celebrating Christmas and threatening to call the police if you so much as stop by to pick up your things. And.. Oh, sorry....my bad.... |

Thanks for the reality check. I was looking for someone to pull me from the sky and bring me back to reality LOL. I definetely want to give everything I have into aviation and see what happens. I realize I can't plan out my future and expect it to go exactly the way I want it, but I know the direction I need to take and one day I'll see where it lands me. |

When I marched drum corps, the staff gave us a copy of this article this article, and many times it has motivated me to achieve things when I was ready to give up. I don't think your goals are unrealistic at all....then again, I am planning to follow almost the identical path you are so I can keep from going too deep into debt. Seriously though, I don't think those goals are idealistic or anything. Just know that it may not work perfectly according to plan, and may not quick or easy...or it may work out better than you planned. Be willing to make adjustments in the path, but never change the goal. I'm in my last semester of college now, living at home, getting ready for the job search that will *hopefully* land me a gig that wll pay for my training. It may get frustrating at times knowing what you want out of life and not feeling like you're making quick progress to get there, but hang in there and things will work out. I'm looking at Ari Ben and Skymates, so maybe I'll see you there in a couple years. |

I went to an aviation univ, and I saw so many people treat flying like their only purpose in life. A large number oif these people are not flying at this time because they forgot to have a back up plan. What happens if that regional isn't hiring, or you lose your medical. To combat the situation, get that CFI maybe the dispatch cert., if able. I now instruct at a 141 Univ and i'm having a great time and an airline job will come when its time. None-the-less, your path sound good. Pick a course and keep it |
