Default CFII written

I'm finally ready to take the CFII written. I already hold a Flight Instructor Certificate so I am just adding instrument privileges to it. I did not know this until today, but there's two instrument instructor exams, the 50 question FII and 20 question AIF (added rating).

Is the AIF meant for adding an instrument-airplane rating to an existing flight instructor certificate or would it be for adding another category (i.e. adding an instrument airplane to an existing instrument helicopter rating)??

Any help is appreciated.

It will be a 50 question test for your CFII.

So what defines the added rating test(AIF)?

You will need the FII. The AFI is only if you already hold an instrument instructor rating for another aircraft category. Reference FAA Order 8080.6E "Conduct of Airmen Knowledge Test." It provides a matrix in Chapter 8 with every possible combination of flight instructor ratings there is and what tests you need to take for them.

Probably more than you wanted to know, but I was really bored.
