Default Student has 709 ride?!?!?!?

Ok, long story short- Knock on wood, ive got a very clean record- no failed rides for me or my students, 20/20 on rides now. I did a BFR for a guy a few weeks back, and he took his airplane up to Memphis and dumped it into the ground on a hard landing. Busted his Columbia 400 up a bit to the point the FAA has violated him and told him he needs a 709 ride.

So the student calls me up,and says that I need to give him training for like 10hrs or something to get him ready for this 709 ride.

1- Do i need to sign anyhting off for him to do a 709 ride that could go on my record?... an 8710 form.. etc etc.

2- Will the FAA need to talk to me about me giving im his BFR only a few days before he broke the plane in memphis?...

I never did any of this guys PRIMARY training, only flew with him on a BFR and that was it- then he had his incident. I don't want this to bite me in the ass in any way...

anyone help me at all on this one?..... Worrying QUITE A BIT right now... i dont want my record or my name screwed up with the FAA cause of someone elses poor choice that I had no hand in. For the record... the BFR was excellent- no probelems or concerns from me.. he did just fine, otherwise I wouldn't have signed off his BFR.

Need some good advice and words of wisdom to help calm me down a bit.....

You won't be held to blame for this pilot's actions so Relax.

As for needing to fill out an 8710, that may be required but it will not be on your record, the 8710 is for him to bring to the FAA. I had to do this once for a pilot who came to me for training after his PPL was revoked (like 10 years earlier).

As long as you did everything right in you Flight Review, I'm sure he will do fine on his 709 ride. You could give him the training to ensure that it does go well since the ink is still drying from your BFR endorsement. I'm sure with your track record you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Ah, this must be the a/c that landed on the nosewheel at my airport, Olive Branch, MS?

You have no need to worry. Same thing happened to a guy here last summer. He did a BFR for a guy and the same day they end flipped the airplane over after landing short. He just flew with the guy a few times before his 709 ride. Guy passed the 709 ride and that was the end of that.

I don't have any words of wisdom, but I wouldn't worry about it. Have a beer...the one in the picture looks good.

I do know a guy who gave a flight review and the next week the guy landed gear up, FAA didn't talk to him.

Ask to see his 709 letter. 709 rides are generally task-specific. If it was a landing incident, it should say that takeoffs and landings will be the subject of the ride. Your training endorsements should help the pilot out by showing that these are the tasks that were covered.

They might want to talk to you. In any accident investigation the subject of training will generally come up and the recent instructors might be interviewed. Only makes sense, doesn't it. That doesn't mean to get paranoid about it, but if you're the nervous type, talking to a professional might help calm you down.

You can be a bit pro-active on this - when the student gives you the 709 letter, call the inspector. Ask the inspector about the incident that led to the decision to require the ride and what areas he thinks you should focus on.

-Thank you very much! I feel much better about it. I've never had to experience a 709, nor do i wish it on anyone, but its good to know other people.

- AS much info as possible as you know about it would be appreciated. How much damage was there? prop. nose, etc etc?

- THis is exactally what my Chief Pilot told me to do, that "we" would get the info from the student- talk to the local fsdo and we would sort it out and that I have nothing to worry about, key word "I" lol. He didn't say the other guy is out of the woods yet.

For now though... COLD BEER IN HAND... TV on.... Porno in the dvd player.. haha.. jk.. but relaxing now non the less!

Thanks everyone for the quick responses... LOVE THIS FORUM!
