Default Another Logbook/Time Logging Question

Hi all--my question revolves around Simulator Time. I am going through my Instrument rating and of course we are working with a simulator at my 141 school. I know I log 10 hours toward the requirement but I 've looked at the FAR's and they are not quite clear on what to log for it so I ask---

Do I log PIC time?
Dual Recieved?

I know I log simulated instrument but the other two I am not sure--I use SafeLog as a digital copy of my logbook and when I do a progress check is mentions PIC time and Dual recieved in sim's so I ask your advice.

Thanks in advance!!

Not familiar with you computer logbook program, sorry. As for logging the time, I suggest to log it in three different columns:

1. Simulated instrument
2. Simulator/FTD
3. Dual Given (make sure the instructor signs your logbook. Cannot log solo sim time.)

You shouldn't log it as PIC, nor log it in the total time column. If you do, you will have a nice mess to clean up when you start applying places.

It isn't PIC; it isn't total time.

BTW: I use LogbookPro, and I have yet to figure out how to get it to stop including FTD time in total time. Anybody familiar with the program have any ideas?

I remember having the same problem with LogbookPro but I don't remember exactly how I solved it. (Don't use it anymore since I moved to Mac). I think there is a place where you can edit the type of the aircraft and say what kinds of time to log for each type. You may be able to go there and make the sim be a type which does not have total time. I know that's a bit fuzzy but that's all I remember.

The pertinent regulations are in 61.51 and they are clear, once you know the code words to look for. If it says "aircraft", then it doesn't pertain to an FTD.
  • PIC time must be in an aircraft, so you can't log it.
  • Training time can be in an aircraft or FTD.
  • Instrument time can be in an aircraft or FTD.
There's no category of "Total Time". You can log it as "Pilot Time" (defined in 61.1), but not "Flight Time" (defined in Part 1). Whether enter it into your "Total Time" column in your logbook depends on whether you want that column to reflect "Pilot Time" or "Flight Time".

That's a good point.
