Default Solo students.

Has anyone's student end up causing damage to an airplane during a solo flight?

I may be able to detail it a bit further in the short future, but for now let's just say that a solo student had some difficulties landing an airplane out at the airport today.

a) The student was not mine.

I had a student wipe out the tail tie down on a skyhawk....no big deal, they are a dime a dozen and most flight schools keep them in stock.

I wasnt impressed but it could have been worse

A student at our school bounced a plane and prop striked it. I emphasize what to do in a bounce big time now.

This is what my FIRST SOLO SIGN OFF student decided to do on his second go at the pattern.

about 4 weeks ago my student totaled his pa28-180.

he was the only student who i've soloed who has had a problem. the problem was caused because he was "experimenting" with some control inputs. the man is in his 40's.

i learned to tell my students not to frack around, but stick with the program.

I get to meet with the student and the FSDO next Thurs, not for a 709 check for me but remedial training for him. >

It hasn't happened yet, but with as many people as I sign off, I am sure it is bound to happen at some point. As long as you do all the presolo stuff properly (training, endorsements, etc...), it can't really be your fault.

Looks like some serious off roading there!

Surreal, I wouldnt worry about it, as long as the instructor is covered with endorsements etc, should be no problem.

I'm not worried about anything, for anyone, except for the student.

I just hadn't really mentioned the subject - since it is kinda one of those unmentionables (Don't ask me if I've had a student do something to an airplane - you'll jinx me type of things).

Hasn't happened at our school. Know someone who it happened to, with fairly substantial damage. He has been hired by two airlines now, both all prop regionals. Took him a few tries to get hired by the first one though.

61.87 guys. Make sure that you document everything in it. If you have on of these " I can solo a guy in 6 hours!" penis contest with other instructors then it could be a career ending mistake.

If something happens and the student logbook shows that you have not gone over 61.87 and you just did 200 touch n goes with the guy you are looking at suspension and violation on your record.

Not to mention the civil liability involved...

Ryan ain't joking. Skymates has seen a handful of these incidents happen and if everything is documented correctly and you did the training, you SHOULD be fine. Now if you get an inspector investigating the case who wants to 709 you no matter what, well, good luck.

I used forms that listed EVERYTHING in the particular section of Part 61 that I needed to detail with the student. I made sure everything was in the student's logbook VERBATIM as it reads in the FAR. Finally, the student had to sign the form indicating that he/she had received all of the required training of the part.

To the point of the post, I had a guy go off the edge of the runway on his first solo. Likely, he didn't allow the nose wheel to straighten when he lined up on the runway. He applied full power and the aircraft lurched to the left side of the runway. He freaked and the left tire exited the runway. This was a guy who NEVER had any problem with runway centerline or not letting the nose wheel caster to center.

If I remember correctly, he soloed within the week. He was definitely my best student before and after the incident.

FUnny this thread comes up. One of our instructors didn't help a private student out on a landing and ... well... NTSB says : http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?e...18X00584&key=1

BASICALLY heres how it went down... power was at idle, student touched down but bounced... he was coming back down for the 2nd bounce but went full power, yanked up REAL HARD on the controls and at 30 feet above the runway POWER-ON STALL!!! TAIL FIRST INTO THE RUNWAY... PLANE TOTALLED... Happened on Rwy. 33 which is right in front of my school, AND its at our home airport...student no longer wants to be a pilot... oh well... N97224 you will be missed (i did my first solo, and all my checkrides minus commercial in that plane darnit)
