| Old Skool | It just dawned on me, and really. . .I could care less. . .but I want to know the rest of you log this type of time. I have a number of instrument students, and I have been just logging it as Dual Given for the whole flight. Do you guys log any PIC time while they are under the hood? These students are all private certificated pilot(s) in ASEL, so I'm also not logging any of the landings, and am not logging any PIC time with them. But, like a safety pilot example. . .two people are logging PIC. Would it be appropriate for me to log the time they are under the hood (for example .8 of a 1.0 flight) as PIC time for me? Not trying to get into a whole debate, just want to know how some of you guys log this type of stuff. Or is it best that I just continue to log it as dual given. |

| ============================== 61.51(e)(3) An authorized instructor may log as pilot-in-command time all flight time while acting as an authorized instructor. ============================== surreal, I have the same question as the others. Why are you choosing not to log legitimate PIC time? Is it because you have met all of your PIC time requirements for Part 135 and your ATP already so you don't need it? |

| The two pilots may, however, agree prior to initiating the flight that the safety pilot will be the PIC responsible for the operation and safety of the aircraft during the flight. If this is done, then the safety pilot may log all the flight time as PIC time in accordance with FAR 1.1 and the pilot under the hood may log, concurrently, all of the flight time during which he is the sole manipulator of the controls as PIC time in accordance with FAR 61.51(c)(2)(i). Enclosed please find a prior FAA interpretation concerning the logging of flight time under simulated instrument flight conditions. We hope that this interpretation will be of further assistance to you.</B> |
