Default CFI Expiration & Renewal

OK...I think I know the answer, but can you all confirm this please??? If a CFI cert. expires say in December of 2008, and you have the 80% pass rate, can you go to the FSDO early to renew your cert and have it extended out to December of 2010 or does the 24 months start from the date you renew it?

I'm fairly certain the new 24 month period starts once you renew it, but I just wanted to make certain.

Dec. 31st, 2010... and can be renewed up to three months prior.

So... if you renewed in October 2008 for a December 2008 expiration... then the renewal takes you too December 31st, 2010.
