Question FOI Endorsement

Hey fellows,

If I recall an endorsement is NOT required to take the FOI knowledge test correct? Am I right on that?

Correct for all CFI writtens you do not need an endorsement.

Out of sheer curiosity - why the heck is there a place in the back of my book for a "FOI Knowledge Test" endorsement?

§ 61.185 Aeronautical knowledge.

(a) A person who is applying for a flight instructor certificate must receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor on:
(1) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, the fundamentals of instructing, including:
(i) The learning process;
(ii) Elements of effective teaching;
(iii) Student evaluation and testing;
(iv) Course development;
(v) Lesson planning; and
(vi) Classroom training techniques.
(2) The aeronautical knowledge areas for a recreational, private, and commercial pilot certificate applicable to the aircraft category for which flight instructor privileges are sought; and
(3) The aeronautical knowledge areas for the instrument rating applicable to the category for which instrument flight instructor privileges are sought.
(b) The following applicants do not need to comply with paragraph (a)(1) of this section:
(1) The holder of a flight instructor certificate or ground instructor certificate issued under this part;
(2) The holder of a current teacher's certificate issued by a State, county, city, or municipality that authorizes the person to teach at an educational level of the 7th grade or higher; or
(3) A person employed as a teacher at an accredited college or university.

I don't see any where where it requires an endorsement.

Also use the AC which has a large list of all the endorsements available.

Right well - I didn't remember ever getting an endorsement for the FOI knowledge test, I got one for the practical... however it struck me as weird when I was thumbing through and saw a spot for an "FOI Knowledge Test" endoresement...

I was thinking "Ok I didn't get one of those..."

I guess "knowledge" in this cases is not reffering to a written?

I don't have my FAR handy, but isn't an endorsement necessary if you were to fail said written exam the first time?

Hey everyone,

I ran into this same problem when I went to take my FOI test. In AC 61-65E, there is an endorsement for the "Fundamentals of Instructing Knowledge Test." Additionally, in Subpart H-"Eligibility Requirements" for Flight Instructors Other Than Flight Instructors with a Sport Pilot Rating, 61.183, it states:

(d). Receive a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor on the fundamentals of instructing listed in 61.185 of this part appropriate to the required knowledge test.

However, both the endorsements and 61.185 make no reference to the person needing the endorsements in order to take the knowledge test. For example, in Subpart E- "Private Pilots," it clearly states:

(d). Receive a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor who:

(1). Conducted the training or reviewed the person's home study on the aeronautical knowledge areas listed in 61.105 (b) of this part that apply to the aircraft rating sought; and
(2). Certified that the person is prepared for the required knowledge test.

Additionally, the Private Pilot Endrosement: Aeronautical Knowledge has a section that states:

I have determined that he/she is prepared for the (name the knowledge test).

The way I understand it, then, is that Flight Instructors are required to obtain an endorsement stating that they have received the required FOI training, but they do not need this endorsement in order to take the test.

Side note: I was worried and went ahead and got the endorsement before I took the knowledge test, however, I was never asked about it. In fact, the proctor even asked me, "You don't need an endorsement for this test, do you?" It was never an issue on the checkride either, so I would not worry about it for the knowledge exam.

And yes, 61.49 states:

(a). An applicant for a knowledge or practical test who fails that test may reapply for the test only after the applicant has received:

(1). The necessary training from an authorized instuctor who has determined that the applicant is proficient to pass the test; and

(2). An enorsement from an authorized instructor who gave the applicant the additional training.

Why is this so ambiguous?

No you do not need an endorsement for the CFI knowledge tests; if you fail them than you will need an endorsement to re-take it.
