Recently I had a CFII student as me "why do some of the VORs's on the low enroute have a compass rose and others do not?" I answered with the response that I had been taught in my CFII training that being, "they are terminal VOR." After that he preceeded to show me some terminal VORs that had them, essentially proving me wrong and making me scratch my head. So I guess my question is, why do some have them and some don't? One answer that I remember hearing is that the VOR's that are unmonitored will not have a compass rose, but I can't back any of those up with literature. Thanks for the help. -Jason

How about if they are part of an airway? I'm guessing... |

| Probably just reducing chart clutter.

| VOR that is a part of an airway has a shaded box on jepps...not sure about NACO though.

The VORs with a compass rose are VORTACs.

| Whoa - that is absolutely, 100%, incorrect. Take a look at a low enroute chart, and you will see plenty of VORs and VOR/DMEs with compass roses. The only logic that I can find it that VORs with Airways and/or other fixes associated with them will have a compass rose. NAVAIDS without any associated airways and/or fixed will NOT have a compass rose.

On Jepp charts, every VOR has a compass rose surrounding the location of the VOR. On NACO charts, VORs which are a part of the federal airway structure have a compass rose. Other VORs (i.e., used for IAPs only) do not have a compass rose. |

Thats what I meant on my first post. You're correct about the compass rose defining an airway.

| Can you hack into the aquatic purchasing summary to see if anyone has bought a tank or supplies to house a dolphin?

| Do you have documentation? I have several examples on my MEM sectional that indicate this is not true.

I don't think he is talking about sectionals, but rather low-altitude enroute NACO charts.

| Ah, you're right. I guess that's why the thread is titled "low enroute". For some reason, I kept picturing a sectional. Maybe it's because I had one next to my computer.

I believe that someone said that they only have the compass rose if used in the airway system. According to a lady from NACO charting office all High and Low VORs will have a compass rose, a terminal will only have one if used with V-airways or SID/STAR. Thanks for the help. -Jason
