quick question on:

(iv) One cross-country flight of at least 2 hours in a single-engine airplane in night VFR conditions, consisting of a total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical miles from the original point of departure; and
Does this have to be a round trip? Just reading it, I'd say no. I briefly tried to find a definition of X/C but could not.

...just some early evening thougts as I am watching my mainframes crunch data..... 8 hours to go....

No it does not have to be round trip. X/C is just a flight that involves a landing at an airport other than the point of departure. Most likely it will be round trip though because it's pretty hard to make two hours out of just 100 miles. You'd probably need at least 150 to 200 miles (depending on the plane) straight line to make 2 hours.

A good way to meet this requirement is to do both the day 2-hr XC and the night 2-hr XC in one flight. Wait until afternoon, pick an airport with a good restaraunt that is at least 100 nm & 2 hours away, get some dinner, then fly back at night. Knocks out both the flights at once. Be sure to log them seperately though.

Yep - for you JEP I would recommend flying up to Duluth during the day, getting dinner, and flying back to Minneapolis at night.

also, you don't have to fly in a straight line for 2 hours. just make sure you go 100nm away and then do landings/manuevers/emergencies/etc to eat up the rest of the time.

Yeah, I've done that too. Just don't get to the destination too quicky. A couple weeks ago I took a student from Castle to Porterville (just over 100 nm) and we had about a 40 knot tailwind, and got there in about 30 minutes. You can only practice maneuvers and touch & go's for so long before you get tremendously bored. The student I was with was highly proficient in all maneuvers and really didn't need the practice, and after running through every maneuver we could come up with, we were both watching the clock in agony waiting for when we could land. A slightly longer flight would have probably been more enjoyable for both of us. In fact the flight back was more enjoyable since it took longer with a 40 knot headwind.

That's true, we already did the Duluth thing didn't we?
We should choose somewhere else then.

Not that I know of, but I do have a friend down there (also a pilot) who we can hook up with and go to "The Brown Bottle" (excellent restaurant!)
