| OK, I'm at point that I can actually do my CFII as my initial CFI rating. I've always been told and seen some places that do the CFII-Initial in a non-complex airplane. The CFII PTS says the aircraft required must have dual controls, and be capable of performing all areas of operations appropriate for the instructor rating sought. I called the local FSDO and spoke to a rather rude lady there that said "What's the PTS say ?" I told her that nowhere do I see in the PTS or the FAR's that I need to fly a complex airplane in the CFII checkride. She said "that's right, but you should call you examiner and let them make the decision..." and hung up. I've seen places on the web, and I actually called and spoke to a flight instructor at Skymates who said that they use their 172's for the CFII there, which is also their programs initial instructor rating. The assistant chief pilot where I am at says that since it is my initial CFI rating, I HAVE to use a complex airplane, whether it is for the CFII or not. I say that I don't. Anyone know or have any ideas on where I can justify this ? |

| Senior Member | Your assistant chief pilot is incorrect. Where is he pulling this from? I did my CFII initial at the FSDO in a 172 SP. |

| I agree with Brett. If you need a complex airplane, the PTS says so, like the CFI-ASE does. Based on a discussion on a related topic on another forum, it may be that this is not completely understood by some folks, including Examiners. So despite the rudeness, the FSDO lady had it pretty much right from a practical standpoint. |

| Just another one of them lovely grey areas. The same question actually came up at my school today, we all thought that as long as its your initial it must be in a complex aircraft.

| You do not need a complex a/c if you do the CFII. You will need to use a Complex for the CFI add-on. That is one of the many benefits of doing a CFII first. |

| I did my CFII as an initial in a C172N.
