I made it past 280 hours of dual given, and I finally had a student puke in the plane while landing at KCBE today. Nasty! It happened on short final. I don't even remember landing the plane. The guys at the FBO gave us some windex and paper towels so my student could clean up and we could be on our way. BTW, there's a one-engined FlyI CRJ sitting out there at CBE. Wonder why it's there? That's funny! I had a Theory of flight student puke on me as I was loosing altitude by doing 80 degree bank turns. At least he told me before he did it. I told him, "there is the window", and right as he opened it, out goes his lunch. Some of it went inside the airplane, but I made sure he cleaned it up.

You know... on one of my checkrides the examiner asked what I would do if someone got sick and threw up. Thought it was a stupid question. Now, thanks to you guys, I know. No pukers yet, but I am not prepared if they do. Will go get some sick sacks. Thanks!

In about 800 hours of dual given I only had one guy go, and he went out the window and on himself so it wasn't too bad. Several got close, but I learned to see the signs quicker and managed to avoid it.

1 Note pale student color and zombie stare. 2 Prepare puke bag. 3 Ask student 'Are you ok?' 4 When student initially gags in response, shove puke bag into face. 5 Make student take puke bag while they take care of business. Seriously though, I've had three discovery flights where they puked - all three had their girlfriends in the back and none of the girlfriends got sick. Fortunately, I recognized the signs way ahead of time and had the bag preped. | |

Luckly you, I had my very first student puke while flying under the hood on his first lesson. We keep barf bags in the plane for such occasions. Happened to me about a week ago too, same deal ,first flight with a new instrument student under the hood, i wish he at least moved his mike, I could hear "huuuuuerll....huuuuuuerll" over the intercom, bad enough having to smell it, let alone hearing it!

Ok my question, what do you use for barf bags ?? The little blue paper feeling bags or gallon sized ziplocks ??? Me I haven't had the feeling to barf, but I carry a very large (2.5 liter) emesis bag I acquired from some ambulance sitting unlocked outside my ED one night. Oh and I have access to really good drugs that don't effect mentation.

I had a CFI joke about using a walmart sack so you could hook the handles around the student's ears! I made it through 800 hours of dual given and only had one. He stuck his entire head out the window of a c-150 and yakked on the tail of the plane. Unfortunately, while his head was out there, the slipstream caught the headset he borrowed from me (which actually belonged to my boyfriend), yanked it off his head, and jerked the cords out of the panel. I remember reaching for the cord to save it, but alas, I was too slow. It hit the horizontal stabilizer and was gone forever. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!

We get a lot of pukers in the Tweet. Our checklist goes something like: 1. Oxygen- 100% 2. Interphone - Comm Only and Interphone listen switch off 3. Clear to the right and simultaneously hand bag to the left. 4. Pull about 6 g's if the student has turned toward you during the projection.

Speaking of Vomit. I was doing some unusal attitude recovery with my CFI today, and he was getting a bit zealous with the manuevers. So turned my head towards him and said "I am not feeling very WELLLLLLLL!LLL!!!!!!!' Startled him a bit, no I did not actually vomit, but it was kinda funny.

I keep gallon-size ziplock bags in my flight bag for pax. Have only had to pull one out once, but was glad I had it. He yacked in a regular airsick bag, then I had him put it all in the ziplock so I only had to deal with the smell temporarily.
