Default MEI initial then single?

OK, you guys were great on the IFR/PIC clarification question that I had, so here is another one for you.

If you get your CFI Intial in a Twin. Thus a MEI as initial. Do you then have to do a single engine ride as well? Now thinking along those lines. Since a Twin will be a complex aircraft, does your single engine ride need to be in a complex single? This is assuming of course you need the single ride after the MEI.

Also can you go ahead and do the CFII in a twin as well?

Thanks

I did my CFI-I and MEI on the same day (same time really) in a Seneca. As far as the single being complex after getting the MEI, I'm pretty sure you don't need to. You will still need to take a single engine ride (can be with a DE since the initial is the only one required to be taken with the FSDO) in order to instruct in single engine aircraft.

I did my CFII first in a 172, then the MEI, then had to go take another single engine ride in a 172 for the CFI. You are right, if the initial is done in a complex multiengine, then the single engine addon doesn't need to be in a complex aircraft.

That is what I thought, now the same question for the Commercial AMEL and ASEL. I need both of course, but can i do the AMEL in a complex twin, and then do the ASEL in a C172 and not a complex? Seems that the AMEL would show my proficiency in a complex aircraft and I wouldn't need to prove it again.

Thanks for the responses.

Yep, that would work. Good luck! I've enjoyed watching your progress here at JC. (Not to sound like a stalker)

Ryno,
When you got your CFII were there any limitations placed on your certificate? I've been having a debate with a few people about that.

No. A CFII (with no other instructor ratings) can provide instrument instruction in single or multi engine aircraft. I believe the stipulation is that both the instrument student and instructor must be rated for the aircraft. In other words, the way I understand it is that, a CFII can provide instrument instruction in a multi engine aircraft if the CFII and student have multi engine ratings on their certificates. The reason for this is because the instructor is not teaching the student to fly multi engine, but how to fly on instruments. I base this on 61.195 (c). Maybe some of the more experienced instructors can elaborate.

Thats what I thought too. At UND there are quite a few people who say that you cant do that, but I've looked in the regs and my interpretation as well as others who I've talked to say that you can. No one here has their CFII only so no one really knows.

Since you are not providing "multi-engine" training with your CFII, can you still do single engine approaches? I still think you can because your student already has their Multi-Rating and you have it too.
